Product Description

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports an average annual income of $69,270 for fashion designers in 2007. Opportunities in the fashion design industry are expected to rise about 10 to 12 percent through 2012. Many designers also go into other areas of the fashion industry, including: fashion buyer, fashion coordinator, retail store manager, and many more. You do not need to live in New York City, and you can start out small or even part time. Ralph Lauren's Polo empire was established on a small men s tie collection that he sold to Bloomingdale s. Demand for fashion designers should remain strong, as consumers hungry for new fashions and apparel styles will spur the creation of new clothing and accessory lines. This new book is a comprehensive and detailed study of the business side of the fashion, fashion design, and consulting business. You will learn everything from the initial design and creation to manufacturing and marketing. If you are investigating opportunities in this type of business, you should begin by reading this book, hopefully picturing yourself producing the perfect dress worn by one of Hollywood s elite. If you enjoy working with people and keeping up on the latest trends, this may be the perfect business for you. Keep in mind this business looks easy but, as with any business, looks can be deceiving. This complete manual will arm you with everything you need, including sample business forms; contracts; worksheets and checklists for planning, opening, and running day-to-day operations; lists; plans and layouts; and dozens of other valuable, timesaving tools of the trade that no designer should be without. While providing detailed instruction and examples, the author leads you through every detail that will bring success. You will learn how to draw up a winning business plan (the companion CD-ROM has the actual business plan you can use in Microsoft WordTM) and about basic cost control systems, copyright and trademark issues, branding, management, legal concerns, sales and marketing techniques, and pricing formulas. You will learn how to set up computer systems to save time and money, how to hire and keep a qualified professional staff, how to meet IRS requirements, how to manage and train employees, how to generate high profile public relations and publicity, and how to implement low cost internal marketing ideas. You will learn how to build your business by using low and no cost ways to satisfy customers, as well as ways to increase sales, have customers refer others to you, and thousands of great tips and useful guidelines. This manual delivers innovative ways to streamline your business. Learn new ways to make your operation run smoother and increase performance. Successful designers will appreciate this valuable resource and reference it in their daily activities as a source of ready-to-use forms, Web sites, operating and cost cutting ideas, and mathematical formulas that can easily be applied to their operations. The companion CD-ROM contains all the forms in the book, as well as a sample business plan you can adapt for your own use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, good information, Jun 6 2008

"How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Fashion Design Business" presents a comprehensible, easy to follow guide towards setting up and operating the reader's fashion design business in a soup to nuts fashion.

The book starts with a chapter that essentially shows a reader the basics of what the fashion business entails and gives the reader an idea of where to start and what to expect. It then follows into the different ways the business could be set up and what would be best for what the future business owner - from idea to business set up to operations to, at the end, options for either selling or leaving the current business. Throughout the book there are various forms to aid in setup that could be used either as-is or as guidelines to creating the reader's own forms. All are also included on the enclosed CD, which also includes a pre-written editable business plan.

While the book does not guarantee a 100% success story with regard to opening and operating the reader's own fashion design business, it does provide a clear and precise plan that goes a long way towards that success.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide, Jun 2 2008

This review is from: How to Open & Operate a Financially Successful Fashion Design Business: With Companion CD-ROM (Paperback)
Janet Engle's manual on how to start a fashion design business is very informative and well-organized. Engle presents a complete guide of all the ins and outs of the fashion business, and also explains in detail how to start a business, design a clothing line, and keep your business going. There are a number of graphics and illustrations in the book to keep the reader interested and entertained.

My favorite thing about Engle's book was the small Case Study boxes interspersed throughout the chapters. These short anecdotes tell the stories of successful fashion businesses and how they overcame a number of obstacles. The true-life stories serve to illustrate Engle's points and as well as provide the reader with examples of Engle's advice carried out in real life.

Throughout her book, Engle provides a wealth of information regarding almost every aspect of the fashion business. Her tone is both informative and motivational, and the layout of the book is attractive and easy to read. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to open their own business, or simply learn more about the fashion industry.

I'm currently thinking about starting my own clothing line, with the goal of having my line sold at upscale boutiques and better department stores. After reading the reviews of other similar books, I decided to buy this one because it came with a CD with an editable business plan. While that is a plus, this book provides only the basics for starting a fashion business, with some references to further research you should do on your own. For my goal, the major downside to this book is that it was not written by a fashion insider who has actually created a commercially successful fashion clothing line. According to the author biography, the author is a marketing consultant. My definition of a commercially successful fashion clothing line is having multi-million dollar purchase orders from all the major department stores. Although the book provides case studies of people who have started their own clothing lines, the case studies are of brands that are local brands that are not recognized nationally. After reading this book, I feel that I need to buy other books on the same topic for more insight.
