Book Description

To the dentist or maxillofacial practitioner, radiology is an essential diagnostic discipline and a valuable tool for treatment planning. Now more than ever, dentists are often the first to encounter lesions of the face and jaws and are frequently held liable for recognizing pathologies and other sites of concern. Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: A Diagnostic Approach provides clinicians of varied disciplines and skill levels a practical and systematic approach to diagnosing lesions affecting the face and jaws. Firmly grounded in evidence-based research, the book presents a clear understanding of the clinical impact of each lesion within a prospective diagnosis.

Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology is logically organized, beginning with the basics of radiological diagnosis before discussing each of the advanced imaging modalities in turn. Modalities discussed include helical and cone-beam computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography, and ultrasonography. Later chapters cover radiological pathologies of the jaw, and also those of the head and neck immediately outside the oral and maxillofacial region. Written by a recognized expert in the field, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology contains a multitude of clinical images, practical examples, and flowcharts to facilitate differential diagnosis.

Review

“Therefore, this textbook would seem best utilized as a reference by those who routinely practice interpretive and diagnostic oral maxillofacial radiology, or by clinicians who practice in medical environments where advanced imaging is employed.”  (Journal of Clinical Orthodontics, 1 August 2012)

“For those (readers) who already have fundamental radiological knowledge, the book is a fresh innovation with evidence-based radiological explanation of diseases with emphasis on advanced diagnostic methods.”  (Danish Dental Association, 1 December 2012)

“The superb image quality and succinct text make it easy to recommend to dental practitioners, maxillofacial specialists and residents embarking on their careers.”  (Int. J. Oral Maxillofac. Surg, 2012)

"Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology: A diagnostic approach (author David MacDonald, Wiley Blackwell, 2011) offers a wealth of information in two clearly delimited, easily accessible dimensions ... The book is soundly sequenced from the initial concepts to the more complex ideas and techniques. Opening with Part 1, which creates a roadmap to the subject, this guided tour is rich in descriptions of diagnostic and management strategies." (Indiana University School of Dentistry, 2011)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great review of modern radiographic technology Jan 17 2012
Format:Hardcover
I found this textbook most update. A great review of new radiographic and medical imaging technologies. It is a great reference textbook for those practitioners who want to understand and interpret advanced medical imaging technologies. The expert reviews and commentaries of the author mostly helpful for busy practitioners and students.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not really useful Nov 14 2011
Format:Hardcover
Had to get it as a required text. Not really informative for a second year dental student. Much of the text discusses about the author's personal opinion on the reviewed papers, and doesn't really give 'information'. Highly recommend looking for other oral radio textbooks

Good book! it's extremely relevant to my practise. Dr. MacDonald was my professor at UBC. I wasn't a very good student back then but I am learning so much with this book. His famous charts and tables make it so easy to read and learn.
