First off, I have all three of these albums. The self-titled first disc
and a BGO remaster of the two follow ups. I do not own and have not
heard the sound quality of this new 3CD Slipcase set. I travelled to
Buffalo NY to see the band play live. The boys and I made the trip to
the show. Our hair was long and it was long ago, almost 40 years ago...
The original pressing of the debut is weak, of course, and I have been
waiting for the remaster but "is this it?" This series from Sony Legacy
are notorious for offering minimal technical information, if any at all.
The BGO 2Fer has better sound than the ordinary early imprints of "Next"
and "Look into the Future"....Right now the price from a seller here in
Ontario is too high for my pleasure. I'll wait to see if this set drops
as so many products do at the "Marketplace".... If I get a good deal, I
will return with an honest evaluation of the sonic quality. Patience.....
UPDATE....finally got a decent price a while back and as far as the sound,
well....nothing extraordinary. It will do for the price, I paid less than $5 per
disc so if you want the early Journey...Add to Cart!

I'm reviewing this particular release, not the albums or music in it (which is fantastic). This is Journey in the beginning, a completely different band, more rock-jazz oriented with clear influences from Return To Forever and like, but adding good songs in between the instrumental passages.
The packaging is the problem here, as many other releases of this kind by Sony/Columbia/Epic... It is called "maximize profit by minimizing costs" by this multi million company. Funny to notice some beautiful packaging by other labels, like Island Records, of more obscure artists that for sure won't sell half. So why is a company like Sony/Columbia/Epic going so cheap? Maybe because their executives needs all the money they can get their hands on to maintain their millionaire lifestyles. Truly sad statement for art.
So try to get the old CD editions of these albums where you'll get nice booklets with lyrics and technical information (both things missing in this package).

...Raised on Radio was out and Departure was in. It would then be a true representation of the classic Journey years.
