2008 five CD box. The Original Album Classics series, courtesy of Sony/BMG, packages together five classic albums from one of the most popular artists on the label's roster, housing them in an attractive slipcase. This set from the American Classic rockers features the albums Jefferson Airplane Takes Off (1966), Surrealistic Pillow (1967), After Bathing At Baxters (1967), Crown Of Creation (1968) and Bless Its Pointed Little Head (1969).

This set collects the first five Jefferson Airplane albums (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing At Baxters, Crown Of Creation and the live Bless Its Pointed Little Head) in the same remastered versions with bonus tracks that were released in 2003. So you get the original albums plus a hefty batch of extras for the low price of around $35.00. Unfortunately what you do not get is any liner notes. You also don't get any credits either (although there is a web address on the back of the box that gives writing credits and recording dates but not much else). Each individual disc is packaged in a mini replica of the original vinyl and the discs are packed into a small cardboard box. I guess the somewhat limited packaging is the tradeoff for the cheap price. On the other hand the 2003 reissues would probably run you about fifty bucks so you do save a bit with this set. Whether you decide to buy it or not depends on how important those liner notes are to you. Me, I picked up the cheap box set and bought the 2003 reissue of Volunteers thereby getting (almost) the complete output of the classic Jefferson Airplane for roughly 45 bucks. Sounds like a pretty great deal to me!

Properly mastered with the original distortion-free dynamic range and tonal balance in place. If you're a fan and are missing any of these discs, you can pick up the entire set for not much more than one of these records would cost. Highly recommended.
