I'm not going to critique these individual albums, if you want that there are plenty of thoughtful reviews alongside the individual albums. In this review I will be discussing the merits of this particular collection.
This set collects the first five Jefferson Airplane albums (Jefferson Airplane Takes Off, Surrealistic Pillow, After Bathing At Baxters, Crown Of Creation and the live Bless Its Pointed Little Head) in the same remastered versions with bonus tracks that were released in 2003. So you get the original albums plus a hefty batch of extras for the low price of around $35.00. Unfortunately what you do not get is any liner notes. You also don't get any credits either (although there is a web address on the back of the box that gives writing credits and recording dates but not much else). Each individual disc is packaged in a mini replica of the original vinyl and the discs are packed into a small cardboard box. I guess the somewhat limited packaging is the tradeoff for the cheap price. On the other hand the 2003 reissues would probably run you about fifty bucks so you do save a bit with this set. Whether you decide to buy it or not depends on how important those liner notes are to you. Me, I picked up the cheap box set and bought the 2003 reissue of Volunteers thereby getting (almost) the complete output of the classic Jefferson Airplane for roughly 45 bucks. Sounds like a pretty great deal to me!
