Great music but wrong picture,
By
This review is from: Original Album Classics (Audio CD)
Patti Smith is one of the most intense singer. There is a lot of songs that not appear on her compilation that I love, like Revenge. But how the editor can make a so gross mistake when he put the picture of the disco signer Patty Smith on the cover. What a missing of respect.

Things Here Are Different,
By Bicycle Day - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Original Album Classics (Audio CD)
This is one of a pair of sets which collect the Arista albums in the incredible career of an artist who may be defined by her "punk" years, but actually cannot be comfortably slotted into pop culture labels. Each CD has at least one bonus track - the standout being the raucous live "My Generation" - and is packaged in a sleeve that is exactly like the original album jacket. They fit snuggly in a case that is comparable with an old school LP case. The growth of Patti Smith as a vocalist and songwriter is captured in "Dream of Life," the June 1988 release that some "fans" claimed was a sell out of the poetic power within her four albums from the 1970s. How collaborator/husband/former MC5 member Fred "Sonic" Smith was a puppet to the corporate side of the music industry was never explained by the folks with cheap seats in the critic's section. Smith's music smashed open the doors for a new generation of musicians who placed a premium on the poetry of words in lyrics. Her gift contained in these five albums continue to inspire those who are willing to listen. 16 of 20 people found the following review helpful

Not For Nitpickers,
By W. Jordan - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Original Album Classics (Audio CD)
The previous reviewer clearly doesn't like this series of 5CD sets because for $30 or so he doesn't get $200 worth of stuff. No duh! No, these sets don't necessarily have *all* the original artwork, they may not have lyric sheets, gatefolds and whatever else he obsesses about. Certainly he is welcome to spend $200 on those pricey Japanese imports to satisfy everything his little nitpicking heart desires. For the vast majority of music buyers, however, $30 or less for 5 CDs is a great deal.

A Very Nice Deal and Re-Introduction to a Fine Artist/Group,

I had not listened to Patti Smith much in the past, dabbling only a bit in Horses, and later, Dream of Life. Here, we get a low-priced path to an instant collection of her first 5 records (Horses, Radio Ethiopia, Easter, Wave, Dream of Life) and without re-mastering, the way I prefer it (easier on the ears). So I went for it and am hooked. I enjoy Patti's voice, her delivery, and the music composition and musicianship of the group; well crafted. And, although I am no rock lyric appreciator for complete poetry/message-sake, I appreciate words that sound good, and go well as part of the composition....Patti Smith's words consistently sound excellent with frequent snippets/lines that evoke good imagery. The music itself is deft and weaves very well in and out of the various moods, whether accompanying singing or during its own interludes. Musicians are tight and deliver music that is good listening on its own merit. I can't say that I would skip over a single song on the entire set. That's pretty amazing for 5 CDs. Regarding the bonus songs; they are appended sparingly and for me, one who had not been too familiar with the core material, they came off seamless with the core material. One exception, the live recording of My Generation is weak and of low sound quality and a bit disruptive. As far as the packaging. I like it; individual LP-like cardboard sleeves with the front and back album art printed on each; no inner dust sleeve (who cares). It's not premium, but pretty good. But CAUTION: the cardboard sleeves don't just slip out of the overall case/package, they FLY out of it. On first opening, I managed to hold it the wrong way and they all went to the floor. Then two other handlers did exactly the same thing. Cringe. This has been an excellent and economical purchase. I will be considering more similar packages for other artists. In the meantime, it's nice to have re-discovered Patti Smith/The Patti Smith Group; it sounds fresh current to me. (I have since added Gone Again -- excellent also.) |
