Product Description

Product Description

Import only five CD set containing a quintet of albums from the R&B/Funk/Soul legend packaged in mini LP sleeves and housed in a slipcase . During the late '60s and early '70s, Sly Stone and his family of funkateers were one of the most popular outfits in the U.S. and beyond. Their blend of classic Soul and future Funk created the blueprint that many other bands still follow over four decades later. This box includes great albums like Dance To The Music (1968), Life (1968) and Stand! (1969).

5.0 out of 5 stars A REAL BARGAIN!!! Feb 26 2012

I see some people complaining about the lack of packaging and bonus materials with these Original Album Classic issues, and that's just ridiculous. What do these people expect for approximately $4.00 per album (including S&H). You're not going to get Japanese SHM quality, but you usually get the latest edition of the CD, as in this case, you get Sly & the Family Stone's first 5 albums remastered with bonus tracks. I would not consider buying each album separately, but at this price, I can afford to explore the album tracks that I've never heard before. If you want bonus material, go to allmusic.com, type in the band's name and you can get the band's discography and AMG critic reviews for each album. In most cases these issues are a real bargain, which is absolutely true in this case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Explore the foundations of FUNK Oct 5 2012

Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart wrote almost every track. He, like George Clinton later, managed a musical collective; but Sly's consisted of both male & female, black & white artists and NOT as mere window dressing. When you listen to the tracks on this bargain-priced set, try and imagine the times in light of that idealism. When you hear the classic "Everyday People," sing along. Maybe you can picture a world where everybody was just everyday people and you felt thankful when people let you be yourself. Sly was of black-rock, AND funk and soul. We tend to like our music more seggregated these days, but if you give these albums a chance, they'll have you wondering what would have happened if the making of music had followed Sly's lead. Even if you are not introspective about the history of the era, I think you'll enjoy these mostly short "Hit-it-and-quit-it" style of songs. There are also a few monster-jams to give you a taste of how jazz/blues improv and psychadelic experimentation influenced things. Dig in and explore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Dec 25 2012

Highly recommend this Sly & The Family Stone box.
You get Sly's first 5 albums at the peak of his creativity !
Several of the albums, Stand-There's A Riot Going On!, are among the greatest rock/funk albums ever released.
You know all that so now onto the business of the box:
These are the remastered cds and they contain bonus tracks.
My only complaint, and it's a legit one, why not put Sly's non-album singles
as bonus tracks on the albums from the years they were released ?
So although this contains the 5 classic albums there is no "Hot Fun In The Summertime #2 hit"
or "Thankyoufalettinme a #1 hit"
They could do without some of the oddball bonus tracks just to have it more complete would've been nice.
Either way I do recommend this as a reasonable way of collecting all of his early music.
