Book Description

Nov. 15 2008 Original Series
The two decades between 1945 and 1965 saw some remarkable motor cars emerge from the new Rolls-Royce factory at Crewe. The Mark VI Bentley was the first model to be built entirely by Rolls-Royce, using a body supplied by Pressed Steel, although coachbuilt cars were still available. The Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn version followed in 1949, this and its Bentley sister both receiving 'big boot' bodies in 1952. Meanwhile the 120mph Continental appeared. The entirely new Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley S-series, almost identical to each other, arrived in 1955, and from 1959 a V8 was installed. By their side, coachbuilt S-series Continentals continued. Original Rolls-Royce & Bentley 1946-65 is the essential companion to these cars. The aim of this book is to reveal, in words and color photographs, how the various models altered through the course of production. Drawing on factory records, parts lists, catalogs and other data, the author has provided a meticulous survey of the standard steel cars built at Crewe. Over 250 specially commissioned color photographs, showing the detail changes to these cars, accompany the authoritative text.

About the Author

James Taylor has been writing professionally about cars since the late 1970s, and his interests embrace a wide range of older cars of all makes and nationalities, as well as classic buses, lorries and military vehicles. However, he also enjoys keeping abreast of current special-interest models such as the BMW M3, because, he believes, today's interesting cars are tomorrow's classics. James has written well over 100 books in all, and among them have been several definitive one-make or one-model titles, including a number for Crowood. He lives in rural Oxfordshire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incomparable coverage of some incredible cars Aug. 21 2010
By Dr Max TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The "Original" series of books takes a particular model of car for its production period and describes it in words and pictures like no other books do. There is so much information on the immediate post-war Rolls Royce and Bentley cars in this book that it's almsot overwhelming. Every model is covered, every production change is noted and described, every feature is explained, and the beautiful full colour photography by Mark Dixon is a joy to admire. James Taylor is a well known automotive researcher and writer and he does himself proud with this volume. It must be an essential item on the shelves of every Rolls Royce fan and is an invaluable source of information on these beautiful automobiles. I have no reservations in recommending this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on details not seen elsewhere Dec 22 2009

I'm in the process of restoring a 1947 Bentley Mark VI and this book has been very helpful in details about the car that I have not seen elsewhere. The pictures are outstanding quality, and although it is not intended to be an A to Z restoration book, it is very informative historically.

I am by no means a collector of RR / Bentley cars, but I am looking to get an S-1 or S-2, and I found this book a source of info to at least know what should be found on a properly maintained car, and what would have been non-stock modifications.

2.0 out of 5 stars Restorers guide absolutely NOT Dec 18 2006
By Casey Olsthoorn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This a nice RR book with lots of production data and the updates throughout the model years. But NOT as a restorers guide? There is absolutely not a single word in it on how to restore this car. It's a waste of money to purchase this book for restoration purposes. It's a nice coffee table book that's all.
