From Booklist
"Sir Roy," as Strong is known in Great Britain, designs gardens for the likes of Elton John and authors countless books on gardening. The focus here is on ornamentation, with lavish photographs befitting Strong's intelligent writing on artistic principles; classic and unusual garden elements; and a gathering of individualistic environments spanning Northern California to the English countryside and artist Robert Dash's New York estate, Madoo. Whether utilizing dramatic color, restrained symmetry, whimsy, or avant-garde materiality, the gardenscapes shown all share highly personal viewpoints. An obvious sense of spaciousness pervades images of long vistas and multiple garden rooms, despite the fact that the examples come under the heading "small." But in light of the charming details captured in pictorial vignettes and the inventiveness of the intimate landscape tableaus, imaginations will surely be stirred, and thoughtful musings generated on what constitutes decor in modern-day gardens.
