5.0 out of 5 stars Longing for a DVD, April 18 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Oscar and Lucinda (VHS Tape)
This movie is near the very top of my list of movies for which I CRAVE to be released on DVD but, at least for the time being, it seems to have fallen through the cracks having had its theatrical release just before the DVD format began to take off and not having been a massive hit to have made it a big priority for the studio to get out in the new format.

If you haven't seen this movie go ahead and find a copy of the VHS for watching it in this format is better than not at all. The acting is flawless (this was Cate Blancheet's first starring role) to cinematography superb, the costumes on target, and the story, the musical score gorgeous, and the plot though not a break neck action flick, very involving.

But above all I plead with anyone in a position to help in this matter to please see to it that this movie gets the DVD treatment it deserves, and SOON!

5.0 out of 5 stars Strangely wonderful, sort-of love story, May 29 2011

Odd, unique, beautifully photographed character study/love story.

Two eccentrics, one the rich owner of a glass-works (Cate Blanchette),
and one an emotionally damaged and physically fragile young minister
(Ralph Fiennes) are united in friendship, and eventually romance by
their obsession with gambling.

Blanchette is luminous and wonderful. Fiennes pushes at times, going
right up to the edge and occasionally over it with his tics and quirks,
but he's ultimately very deeply effecting.

A strange mix of tones, comic, romantic; it behaves both like an epic
and a parody of one. But it has never failed to move me, and it's full
of moments where the beautiful imagery dances so well with Thomas
Newman's delicate score that I get a shiver.

4.0 out of 5 stars a cage for angels, Oct 20 2009

Interesting story about two gamblers. Good acting, story moved along smoothly. Ending a little unbelievable, as I couldn't get over how stupid it would be to transport the church fully assembled on a barge - it weighs a ton. Kate Blanchett is wonderful.
