Although the comedy team of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg does not sound like a threat to Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello, they conjure up consistent laughs in The Other Guys, yet another comedy from Talladega Nights director Adam McKay. Ferrell plays a mild-mannered police accountant partnered with Wahlberg's hothead (recently demoted to desk-jockey duty after shooting a very famous Yankee player during the World Series), and both men must endure the showboating fame of a pair of supercops (Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson) in their New York City precinct house. Along with sending up cop-movie clichés, the movie basically exists to give Ferrell and Wahlberg room to work amusing variations on their characters (with grace notes for Michael Keaton's stereotypical tough captain, too). The loosey-goosey structure works especially well when Wahlberg is needling his partner's squareness or marveling, in wonderfully awestruck tones, at the unbelievable hot-i-tude of Ferrell's wife (Eva Mendes)--a discrepancy made all the more maddening because Ferrell seems indifferent to her charms. Throw in a plot about a billionaire Wall Street crook (Steve Coogan) and the revelation of Ferrell's hilariously dark past, and the movie finds a nice zone of silliness. Of course, any Will Ferrell vehicle must be judged by the opportunities for the star to launch into some borderline-surreal riff--and happily, this film comes through. From the moment Ferrell begins deconstructing Wahlberg's lion versus tuna metaphor, The Other Guys manages to find time for such nonsense, and the film--the world in general, for that matter--is the better for it. --Robert Horton

Will Ferrell is an admirable actor, and what I particularly admire about him is his fearlessness. Sometimes he plays a button down guy as in Stranger Than Fiction, who breaks out of his everyday character and finds true love in the process, and sometimes he is just an over the top alpha male as in Talladega Nights - The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (Unrated Widescreen Edition)or a lovable jerk as in Anchor Man, and let's not forget the random acts of unnecessary nudity as in Old School.

Mark Wahlberg appears to be getting better and better. Shooter is perhaps my favorite. In recent movies, I think he has vastly expanded his range as an actor. In The Departed he was a typical alpha male police detective, yet in The Lovely Bones he offered a very delicately nuanced portrayal of a grieving father.

When you put these two guys together on screen in this movie you have movie magic, because The Other Guys manages to accomplish what other comedies do not, which is to be funny without even trying.

A large part of the credit has to go not only to the actors, but also to the writers. In Gamble and Hoitz they play two cops who have fallen from grace and end up being partnered together.

As you might expect we learn more about them as we go along. Hoitz (Wahlberg) hates Gamble, and has rage management issues, and occasionally goes off at Gamble over the fact that he just does not like him. Everything he does is annoying. A particularly funny bit is the Lion Tuna metaphor, which had me clutching my sides.

The desk pop, faceback, meeting Gamble's hot wife played by Eva Mendez, channeling the inner pimp, the Prius, the coked up crime scene, wooden gun, every situation is hilarious, but also very well paced.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Other Guys Jan. 5 2014

The Dvd and Blue Ray were fine and came in reasonable time, however the digital copy of the movie was expired. This was not made clear to me before I purchased it. I feel this should have been clearly stated.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the movie of the year, but... Jan. 1 2014

Compare this to Cop Out, and I believe this one would get the upper hand. The characters are quite caricatured, of course, and in true Will Ferrell fashion, outburst of yelling and random over acting is expected, but this is truly a nice movie to kill a few hours. Dwayne Johnson and Sam Jackson really are a formidable duo as the "cop stars" of the NYPD, and most of the supporting cast plays quite well. There are a few scenes wasting time, but mostly, it has great comedy momentum and it's nice to have Mark Whalberg in a comedy, much like his later work in "Ted"...

Special features are comprised of a healthy 100 + minutes of edited scenes, gag reel, interviews, commentaries, etc. I think there's a few hit and miss as the movie lacks a serious production documentary, because at one point, you can't go on and let people know Will Ferrell is unpredictable on set... it becomes a bit... predictable.

All in all, action fans would like it, comedy fans would unite, so if you have yet to pick this one up, rent it first just to be sure it's in your tastes.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good but uneven Feb. 8 2013

Will Ferrell with his very attractive wife, who he treats like manure, is funny. The bums partying in the vehicle is funny. There are some parts though that didn't work. Overall, pretty good but no Anchorman for sure.
