The otterbox is great! I just ordered one from my friend after I showed him mine. The defender series is really tough and will withstand alot of punishment (but im not suggesting you should throw it against the wall or on the ground thinking it is completely indestructible). The otterbox defender case is a must for the iTouch 4g!

This case has proven to be just what we were looking for! Within a day of putting the case on the iPod, it dropped on cement and .... all was well! The screen protector is not even noticable, in both appearance and usability.
I would recommend this case for children especially, but also to anyone who wants to surefire protect their investment.

Great protection, poor for docks Jan. 12 2011
By Eric M. Upchurch - Published on Amazon.com
Just got this case to replace the Belkin Grip Graphix (a nice silicone case), which I liked but doesn't do much of anything for protection.

I loved the Otterbox I got for my wife's Blackberry, which would have been toast by now without its protection, so I decided to give this a try to protect my new iPod. Purchased directly from Otterbox (used 10% off coupon). Extremely fast delivery (2 days).

The Good:
- AWESOME protection. This thing is made to take a beating more than any other case I've seen
- Nice screen cover. Anti-glare, but doesn't have too much sparkling/diffraction effect. Also easy to wipe down. Can't comment on durability yet, but seems good so far. No problems at all using the interface through the screen.
- Buttons are still easy to use (volume requires some force to press, but nothing bad)
- Very good grip - much easier to hold than the plain iPod without a case (though the Belkin I had was also very good in this regard, as are most silicone cases)
- Looks nice, very clean appearance
- The silicone outside fits nice and tightly over the hard inner shell

The Bad:
- Pretty bulky - turns your nifty thin iPod touch into the size of an iPod classic. Still, not too bad for the level of protection it provides
- Raised edges around the screen make it harder to use the interface, especially for some games and trying to type when in vertical/portrait orientation. I even fail to unlock it with the slide gesture fairly often (but then again, I have large fingers)
- Some uncovered parts, including the Apple logo on the back. This is good and bad - probably good for camera quality, but when you take that case off after a while, I imagine you are going to have a nice scratched up circle around the Apple logo =P

The Ugly:
- It pretty much will make your iPod unusable in any dock. I finally got an iPod to use with my Onkyo dock, and now I can't dock it. But, I knew this by the other reviews before I bought it!
- The flaps covering the dock connector and earphone jack are floppy, as mentioned by other reviews. This really is just ugly. In particular, the one for the earphone jack doesn't seat properly into the jack, and pops out a bit which looks goofy and catches my finger when holding it.

Overall, I like the case, but am bummed about the docking issue, and don't care for the floppy covers over the ports. I would give it 4 - 4.5 stars.

Great case with a few annoyances Jan. 4 2011
By Bumblestiltskin - Published on Amazon.com
I had a 2G/3G Defender case on my previous iPod Touch 3G, which is now my wife's since she got me the 4G for xmas. The new 4G case feels pleasantly thinner than the previous model (which felt a bit too chunky), but I hope it has the same level of protection. I've dropped my previous iPod accidentally from counter height onto tile floor and it's been fine in the 2G/3G Defender case, and the new thinness of this case makes me wonder if it would protect as well (not intending to try).

As others have mentioned, the sync port and headphone dock flaps on the bottom are more difficult to get to stay in, and flop out easier, which is frustrating enough to almost give this 4 stars instead of 5, but that would be unfair to other people looking to compare this great case to other lesser cases. The 2G/3G version of this case completely covered the iPod and stayed covered unless you deliberately opened the port flaps. This case has 4 unprotected holes: for both cameras (front and back), for light sensor, and for the speaker (next to the ports). Not sure how I feel about that. Will probably let more dust/dirt in, and the new hard plastic case is much harder to take off than the previous one for cleaning.

On the plus side, the new protective screen exhibits no oilslicking like the old one did (see talcum powder workarounds for that on the old one), but the new one has already picked up a few light fingernail marks from my relatives playing angry birds on it.

The pad for the power button does make it easier to press, but the volume pads require substantially more force.

I've had it now for a bit under a week, and it's still a wonderful case, like the previous gen version, with the above caveats. 4 stars comparatively, 5 stars compared to other cases.

UPDATE: After using it daily for a couple months now, I've dropped this from 5 to 4 stars, as the silicone wrapper keeps slipping, and buckling up a bit on the hard inner case. This combined with the flaps issue, regular dirt accumulation through the holes, and a bit of tactile (not audible) creaking of the plastic case, compel me to 4 star this instead of 5. Don't get me wrong, if I lost it, I'd replace it with another one, and it still protects very well against drops and bumps, but it seems a few needless things were shortcut when designing this.

Great case if you don't use a dock. Jan. 22 2011

All of the good things people have said about this case are true. It is simple to install and will protect your iPod Touch from just about anything that might happen during regular use. I, unfortunately, have returned mine because I cannot use the dock on my new TV Panasonic TC-L22X2 22-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with iPod Dock. At first I thought is was because of the floppy port covers (Yes, they don't stay in very well.) on the bottom, but I later noticed that the hard inner case adds about 1/4-1/2 inch on the bottom of the Touch so the dock cannot be fully inserted. It does work great with the dock that comes with the Touch (the one that attached to your computer via USB) but you might be disappointed if you expect to use a stand-up dock.

Excellent design, with the exception of the silicone port covers, which are acceptable. Jan. 9 2011
By Two kids mom - Published on Amazon.com
I had never used an Otterbox before, but they came highly recommended, so I ordered them sight unseen. I am pleased with my purchase.

For those of you who have never seen one, the case consists of two layers. The first is a two piece hard shell that snaps around the Ipod. Be sure to get it to snap down on all sides. The top has a built in screen protector, I was worried about how this would affect the feel of the Ipod but it does not seem to be an issue for my kids. It does have just a tiny bit more "drag" (the coefficient of sliding friction is a little higher for my fellow geeks) than the glass surface of the Ipod, but they quickly got used to that difference.

The second part is a silicone skin that fits around the hard shell. If the skin does not appear to be fitting correctly then you do not have the hard shell snapped down fully. The two flaps on the bottom fit into the jack and the charging slot, these are the weakest part of the design as far as I am concerned. It takes a little finesse to get them to stay correctly as the silicone "plug" part that fits in needs to be put in at sort of an angle.

The silicone skin actually makes operating the volume and on/off buttons easier, as they stick up more, although slightly more force is needed to operate them. The case defiantly adds a little bulk to the Ipod, but this is not a bad thing as it is much easier to hold. The extra width though, means that a lot of docking products will not work with the case on. You can, however, plug in the charging cable that comes with the Ipod without removing the case.

From a physics point of view the case design makes sense. The silicone cover will increase the time of impact (even doubling the time in fractions of a second will halve the force) when dropped and the hard shell will provide further protection to the edges of the Ipod by breaking before the Ipod edges are impacted. That said, I am not willing to drop it to test it! I wish that Otterbox would conduct drop tests on their products and publish them though.

Very High Quality Product Jan. 14 2011

Before I begin, I want to let you know that I'm writing this review from the perspective that I received my case in expected condition with ample shipping time. I only aim to tell you what I thought of the product as opposed to the suppliers/packaging/etc.

This case is wonderful. It's nowhere near as bulky as most reviews say, but it does a great job of protecting the ipod. There is a plastic screen cover that you can't even tell is there because it doesn't affect my finger sliding abilities what so ever, but it's obviously doing it's job. The case is basically a very hard, protective cover with a silicone overwrap. It does a very good job of creating enough room for the cameras, which are unprotected for good reason. This case is expensive, but I guarantee you that you will see that it is the best case out there. I have full confidence that I could drop my iPod in this case 100+ times on a hard surface, and it would not be affected whatsoever.

As for any potential negatives, there are none. There are some slight annoyances though which do not degrade the product whatsoever unless you are very nit picky. There are flaps for the headphone jack and charging slot which do stay in fine, but are kind of annoying when you have to remove one of them to listen to headphones. When I see the flap up like that, it just doesn't look completely right. Also, since the case has a border of slightly raised elevation around the screen, it is sometimes more difficult to hit buttons that are on the very edges of the screen, or to move apps from one screen to the other. It's very do-able and is hardly annoying, but it's something I guess. Sound horrible? I didn't think so. That's about all I can say that's negative about the product.

This product is amazing, I only say the negative aspects so that you take this as a realistic review instead of an "OMG I LOVE THIS PRODUCT BUY IT NOW" review. So if you want the best for your iPod touch, fork out the money for this. Just compare it to the money you spend when you take your significant other to dinner one night and pay for it (even if you're a girl, just imagine). It's well worth the investment
