Review
I was given H.E. Marshall’s Our Island Story at Christmas 1936 and I’ve still got that copy. It was a direct inspiration for me in my career as a historian.” Antonia Fraser
About the Author
Surprisingly little is known about the life of Henrietta Elizabeth Marshall. She is thought to have been born in 1867, but the date of her death is unknown. She concealed her gender using the initials H.E. in her writing.

Not only will young listeners hear the fascinating story of Britain, they will also experience Marshall's Edwardian-style, since this history was written in 1905. Myth and reality are combined, substantially adding to the history commonly found in school books. Narrators Anna Bentinck and Daniel Philpott are spot-on as they continually switch accents and move from text to quotation in this fast-paced history. Bentinck presents the comprehensive introduction, and then she and Philpott take up the story, never failing to keep listeners' attention. Also included is a booklet that helpfully lists chapters, historical periods, and the placement of material on each CD. Listening to this unique presentation is a rewarding experience.
