The Galactic Hegemony has been around a long time, and it likes stability--the kind of stability that member species like the aggressive, carnivorous Shongairi tend to disturb. So when the Hegemony Survey Force encountered a world whose so-called "sentients"—"humans," they called themselves—were almost as bad as the Shongairi themselves, it seemed reasonable to use the Shongairi to neutralize them before they could become a second threat to galactic peace. And if the Shongairi took a few knocks in the process, all the better.
Now, Earth is conquered. The Shongairi have arrived in force, and humanity’s cities lie in radioactive ruins. In mere minutes, more than half the human race has died.
Master Sergeant Stephen Buchevsky, who thought he was being rotated home from his latest tour in Afghanistan, finds himself instead prowling the back country of the Balkans, dodging alien patrols and trying to organize scattered survivors without getting killed. And in the southeastern US, firearms instructor and former Marine Dave Dvorak finds himself at the center of a growing network of resistance—putting his extended family at lethal risk, but what else can you do?
On the face of it, Buchevsky’s and Dvorak’s chances look bleak, as do prospects for the rest of the surviving human race. But it may well be that Shongairi and the Hegemony alike have underestimated the inhabitants of that strange planet called Earth…

Not his best,
This review is from: Out of the Dark (Hardcover)
As a big Weber fan, I am not used to such a huge miss as 'Out of the Dark.' It literally takes a physical effort to read--let alone finish--this book. The characters are so completely flat and boring, I have absolutely no interest in their plight. I couldn't care if they all die for pete's sake. Ironically, the only character that has some sway over me is the Vamp; and let me tell you how disappointed I was when I heard that Weber was introducing that 'beloved' genre element to this book. The plot is utterly boring; I feel like I am reading a weapons manual. I really don't care how big a MI-whatever is, or what kind of rifle does this, or blah blah. Just tell me it goes boom and that will be that. Very disappointed with this book. I hope he does not attempt to create a series out of this story

Bad Naughty Puppies!,

This review is from: Out of the Dark (Hardcover)
Like many others, I got caught up in David Weber's Honor Harrington series but for the last few years his quality has been declining both in his solo and colaborative works. Still Weber could write decent action sequences to compensate for increasingly weak plots and two dimensional charaters. Out of The Dark continues his decline in plot and character development with none of the taunt action that have been Weber's recent saving grace. Some have described the book as a weapons manual with its totally mind numbing technical detail and I can only concur. His earlist books had bad guys you could relate to which added to the tension of the story, here we have bad "puppies" with all the complexity of character development you would expect of a mutt, unfortunately the good guys are equally as flat. Finally what can you say about the story itself other than where the hell was the editor??!! Honest to god, vampires??? The publisher knew this was a rip off that would sell books only due to novels written a decade ago. The same story was written by Harry Turtledove in his Worldwar tetralogy but there the characters had some depth, the plot was interesting and the action crisp.

Deus Ex Machina "with spoilers",

This review is from: Out of the Dark (Hardcover)
Now generally I am a huge fan of David Weber's work. But this particular novel left me a little flat. First I thought that the loss of most of humanity happened too far "off-camera" and I wasn't pleased by the way Vampires only showed up at the last minute to save the day. Now I haven't checked to see if this was just a first novel in a series, which would serve to lessen the problems somewhat. To me it seemed that you have a standard Sci-Fi military novel here that has been written into a corner tactically, perhaps an earlier unfinished novel, that is then hastily resurrected by grafting on a left field solution.
