Remember Rock Aid Armenia? Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi, and many other friends gathered together to raise money for earthquake victims in Armenia. Now, 21 years later, Gillan and Iommi are ready to help again, by recording two more awesome songs. Joining them are Nicko McBrain, Jon Lord, Jason Newstead, and Linde from H.I.M.

First of all, I will just say how wonderful it is to hear Ian Gillan's voice in front of Tony's guitar again, first time since the Gillan's Inn album. But even better is hearing Jon Lord's organ behind Ian. It's just jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring.

"Out Of My Mind" is a slow groove rocker with some exotic sounding notes in the very powerful riff. I don't think I've ever heard Nicko McBrain play a groove like this before, proof that the man is one of metal's greatest drummers. The song vaguely reminded me of a more powerful version of "Soon Forgotten" from Purpendicular. But this is a powerful, driving song, and one that I will be enjoying plenty this summer.

"Holy Water" is much more exotic, with flutes and other assorted instruments joining the fray. Once the song gets going, it's a little more upbeat than "Out Of My Mind", again anchored by the organ.

To make this CD a little bit more worth your purchase at these prices, they included the video for "Out Of My Mind" (studio footage, much like the Rock Aid Armenia video) and a 27 minute documentary. The CD is housed in a nice white digipack, with notes from Iommi and Gillan inside.

4 stars. Don't sweat the price too much, this is a collectible and the money goes to a good cause. (I'm grabbing one on vinyl too, only 1000 copies made!)

Gods of Rock convene for a great cause! June 30 2011

I had to post this review to balance out the other clearly tone-deaf review. Iommi and Lord dominate each track obviously. It's great to hear Sabbath and Purple vets collaborating. Gillan's voice is still very strong and he sounds great. Don't hesitate to buy this and support a great cause. These guys put new "rock" bands to shame without a doubt.

Too bad it's only 2 songs!! Aug. 27 2011

Powerful line up, absolutely fantastic songs. I keep wondering how good would sound an entire album with all these musicians together. Iommi + Gillan, even in their 60's, still rock.

Tony Hendrix Iommi July 2 2011

Awesome, Tony Iommi should be worshiped like Jimmy Hendrix, SRV, Randy Roads or Jimmy Page. Hes a guitar hero. I just like everything he puts out there. Nothing can be heavier than Tony Iommi.
God bless this man.

For a good cause but not good music. June 24 2011

Iommi plays the bad riffs great, the drums are good but the rest is tried. Sounds like nu-fake rock.
