Remember Rock Aid Armenia
? Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi, and many other friends gathered together to raise money for earthquake victims in Armenia. Now, 21 years later, Gillan and Iommi are ready to help again, by recording two more awesome songs. Joining them are Nicko McBrain, Jon Lord, Jason Newstead, and Linde from H.I.M.
First of all, I will just say how wonderful it is to hear Ian Gillan's voice in front of Tony's guitar again, first time since the Gillan's Inn
album. But even better is hearing Jon Lord's organ behind Ian. It's just jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring.
"Out Of My Mind" is a slow groove rocker with some exotic sounding notes in the very powerful riff. I don't think I've ever heard Nicko McBrain play a groove like this before, proof that the man is one of metal's greatest drummers. The song vaguely reminded me of a more powerful version of "Soon Forgotten" from Purpendicular. But this is a powerful, driving song, and one that I will be enjoying plenty this summer.
"Holy Water" is much more exotic, with flutes and other assorted instruments joining the fray. Once the song gets going, it's a little more upbeat than "Out Of My Mind", again anchored by the organ.
To make this CD a little bit more worth your purchase at these prices, they included the video for "Out Of My Mind" (studio footage, much like the Rock Aid Armenia video) and a 27 minute documentary. The CD is housed in a nice white digipack, with notes from Iommi and Gillan inside.
4 stars. Don't sweat the price too much, this is a collectible and the money goes to a good cause. (I'm grabbing one on vinyl too, only 1000 copies made!)
