Product Description

From Amazon

When ferret Swartt Sixclaw and his arch enemy Sunflash the Mace swear a pledge of death upon each other, a young creature is cruelly banished from the safety of Redwall. As he grows, he seeks revenge on the people of Redwall and finds himself embroiled in a hostile battle with far-reaching consequences.

An epic tale of Redwall from the pen of master storyteller Brian Jacques, Outcast of Redwall is a kaleidoscope of color, range, and emotions that culminates in a bitter contest between good and evil. None of the passion of the earlier Redwall titles is lost, as some of the most cherished landscapes and best-loved characters from previous books are revisited, with a wisdom and clarity that has developed and endured.

On a basic level, this is a marvelous fantasy adventure story. Look deeper and you will find that Outcast of Redwall, along with the other titles in the series, has a divine, enduring quality that ranks it among he best in children's literature. --Susan Harrison --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Dishing out neither surprises nor disappointments, Jacques's latest Redwall installment (after The Bellmaker) is likely to satisfy his considerable fans even if it doesn't win him any converts. This lengthy story rumbles into life when Sunflash, a badger, prisoner of the cruel ferret Swartt Sixclaw, escapes and swears revenge. Sunflash is destined to get not only his revenge but much else besides, for he is a Badger Lord, fated to rule the mountain Salamandastron. Drawn there by dreams, after an epic journey he takes command of the resident regiments of fighting hares and various serving beasts, and soon defends the mountain from a horde raised by Swartt. Though strongly plotted and spiced with a variety of secondary characters, Jacques's new concoction, like the vegetarian feasts he describes often and in detail, will not appeal to all tastes: the repasts are not the only parts of the story that go on too long, and the characteristics of all the animals in the story are fixed by their species. Moles, for example, are all rural bumpkins, with a "quaint mole dialect" that requires some study. Such ingredients, of course, may be just what makes the Redwall recipe so consistently popular. Ages 8-up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outcast of Redwall, Jun 3 2004
By A Customer
Veil, a ferret in Brian Jacques's book Outcast of Redwall, is raised in Redwall. Son of a warlord and a vermin, he doesn't listen to the advice of his elders and caretakers but leads a life full of mischief. When he is thrown out of the abbey, Bryony, his adopted mother/friend/advisor, goes after him. She still believes there is still some good in him. Is there?
Sunflash and Skarlath had been friends since they were very young. They were true friends, warning each other of danger and helping each other in times of need. Would it always be like that?
This book is a great book about having faith in others and being a good friend. I like it because it is one of the typical Redwall books with badgers, otters, squirrels, mice, and hares, but it's different than all the rest because in not one of the other ones has a vermin, in this case a ferret, been raised in Redwall. I like that uniqueness about this book. I also like how it shows that even if someone has been bad all their life, they can still do good things.

I think Outcast of redwall is the best book in the redwall series. All the characters are really intresting(especially Veil). Its got lots of action, is really funny, it has lots of different and intresting animals, it is very exciting, has lots of funny songs, hard riddles to solve, great food, intresting words, lots of different forts and castles, each type of animal has its own accent and personality.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, Mar 3 2004
By A Customer
I didn't like this book as much as Redwall, or Mossflower. Although it is an adventure book, it didn't have enough action, and had too much emotion. This book had a weak plot, because it's the same plot as most books. The main character always saves someone, or finds what they're looking for.
Swarrt Sixclaw, a warlord with a massive army, ridicules a badger that he captured long ago. This badger is tortured every day. A bird is separated from his family, migrating south. This hawk, named Skarlath, traveled north. The winds and snow cause him to crash into a tree, unconscious. Swarrt sends his army to forage for food, and they find an unconscious hawk, frozen to a tree. Sixclaw then ties the badger to the same tree, so they can be tortured together. Skarlath regains his consciousness, and sees a large, baby badger hanging by his paws on a branch.
The badger takes his body, and wraps himself around the hawk. The ice melts, and the kestrel is freed. He then uses his beak to cut the bonds holding the large badger, and takes out his gag. They both run away. The badger grabs a large log, and runs back to the vermin's camp. He destroys everything, and kills many, in revenge for years of captivity and ridicule.
That was just the first battle, will Swarrt take revenge? What is this mighty badger's name? Read the rest of this book to find out.
