5.0 out of 5 stars There is nothing wrong with your DVDs, or is there? Part 2, July 13 2010

This review is from: Outer Limits - The Complete Season 4 (DVD)
Well, I just received season four, and as I said in by previous review of season three, the package is not very user friendly, where you have the discs sliding one on top of another with no hubs in the plastic digi-pack. Still I'm glad to have the complete season by season releases and will buy the rest (seven seasons in all) when they are released. Us fans just have to be more careful when removing and replacing the discs into the package.

I have, however, noticed a slight drop in the quality of the DVD content, and this started with season three and continues with season four.

Alliance's season two and MGM's season one were made from the original prints that were first shown on The Showtime Cable Channel in the United States. (I presume Alliance's season one was as well; I did not buy this version of season one because I already had the MGM version.)

Anyway, with season three and four, the episodes are NOT the original Showtime versions; they are the syndicated Canadian TV versions. The difference: 1) The episodes have the fade-outs and fade-ins where the commercials were inserted; 2) Any brief nudity or four letter words have been edited out; 3) The theme music for the closing credits is different, even from the U.S. TV syndicated versions; 4) With season four the opening montage was changed--the narration and music are the same but the original Showtime versions displayed a whole new sequence of images. Here in the Canadian release, season four episodes are replaced by the original opening of seasons one, two, and three. Why?? (Also, the original Showtime broardcasts never included the words "Please Stand By" at the end of the opening montage.) and finally; 5) The overall picture quality is slightly inferior. I know all of this as fact because I recorded most of the episodes (seasons one through six on Showtime and season seven on the Sci-Fi Channel) on Super-VHS cassettes when they first debuted begining in 1995 through 2001 and I still have these recordings.

I may be nit-picking here, and would like to know what other OL fans think. I'm still quite happy to have these releases and look forward to the rest. That's why I've given these a five-star rating, but I do wonder why we can't have the episodes on DVD just as they were first presented on cable TV as most other TV series are.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice to have it, but..., Aug 2 2010
This review is from: Outer Limits - The Complete Season 4 (DVD)
Five years after MGM released Season 1 in the U.S., the rest of the series is being issued in Canada. It's great to have these episodes, several of which I missed when they were originally broadcast.

Unfortunately, these are the edited versions. The series was originally shown on Showtime, and included some brief nudity and an occasional four-letter expletive. Edited versions were then prepared for syndication, with the nudity and strong language edited out, and commercial breaks inserted.

While the Season Two set included the originals, with the exception of one episode, Seasons Three and Four have only the edited versions. In many cases, this doesn't change things too much, but there are some episodes in which entire scenes have to be deleted.

The real disappointment is the video quality. It's tolerable, but far below the standard for DVD. I didn't realize just how bad it is until I went back and looked at some of the MGM discs. Seasons 2 and 3 were OK, but Season 4 shows a real drop in fidelity.

I'd give the series four stars for the quality of the stories and the production, but it's a shame that they couldn't produce a DVD package that's up to modern standards. This is just a tiny notch better than having a set of old VHS tapes recorded from the commercial broadcast.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible Packaging Causing Defective DVD's - DO NOT BUY!, Oct 25 2010

All Alliance DVD sets are defective. Amazon has replaced all sets in Outer Limits and Earth Final Conflict more than 4 times. When I open the box, most DVD's fall out. There are no spindles holding the discs and they are piled on top of each other, rubbing against each other causing severe scratching during shipping. There are flimsy clips holding the edges of only some discs. Someone at Alliance needs to be fired for changing long tested packaging that has worked for the last few decades. In addition, many episodes are edited from the original broadcast version.
