Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Patricia "Patch" Kendrick arrives in Oak County, Tex., from Fort Benton, Mont., to claim Ethan Hawk, a man who jokingly promised to marry her eight years earlier when he was a 25-year-old running from the law and she was the precocious 12-year-old daughter of a man who befriended him. Patch has transformed herself from a tomboy into a well-bred woman, but Ethan's position remains largely unchanged. Though he was eventually caught and jailed for murder, he has been stalked since his release by the father of a woman he allegedly raped. Ethan swears he found Merielle after the rape and that he killed in self-defense. Merielle can't shed light on those events because since the trauma she has had the mind of a child. Ethan pretends he's not in love with Patch as she attempts to clear his name in a manner that demonstrates that under the veneer of high society remains a core of will and assertiveness. But that spirit is contradicted when she says things like "You'd never rape a woman, Ethan . . . You wouldn't have to." Unfortunately, Johnston's ( Kid Calhoun ) efforts at generating suspense prove futile since the plot is predictable and the true criminal is obvious early on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Providing back cover blurb, Dec 29 2005

From the back cover:

She was the tomboy tease he remembered as a kid...now a bewitching beauty determined to lasso his heart...

When the gorgeous blonde sashayed into Oakville, Ethan Hawk was a goner--until she told him her name: Patch Kendrick. The brat he remembered from Fort Benton, Montana, was now a luscious lady hunting for her man: him! Nothing, not even his outlaw past, would keep her off his trail. Ethan Hawk couldn't afford the luxury of love. Not with the law--and a vengeful enemy--hot on his tracks.

Patch Kendrick always knew Ethan Hawk was the man for her--even as he galloped out of her childhood with a price on his head and nary a backward glance. Now that she's found him again, she was armed and ready for love. So Patch set out to find the villain who framed him--and ambushed her lifelong dream...

I liked this book. It didn't have everything I usually look for in sizzling romance novels, but it kept be turning the pages. And I cared about the charaters. If your looking for a real sizzling page turner try "Anything, My Love" by Cynthia Simmons.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money, Nov 27 2001

I rarely write negative reviews but I make the exception here. This is not one of her better books. The characters are one-dimensional, the plot (which looked promising) became implausible quickly and got worse as the book went on. (I'm angry at myself for finishing it when I knew it was poorly written within the first 100 pages.) Patch is an interesting woman but Ethan's character has no real focus. The recovery of the victim in the crime Ethan is wrongly accused of is so sudden and happens so easily you wonder what took 17 years!?

The cover promises "an amusing and imaginative romp" from Affaire de Coeur but if you want this kind of read try Julia Quinn, Sabrina Jeffries, Julia London (all 5 of her books are wonderful), Kinley MacGregor, Maggie Osborne (anything written AFTER 1993), Gaelen Foley. Now these woman can write!
