Product Description

Amazon.com Essential Video

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane

3.0 out of 5 stars Special Edition Sucks!, Sep 16 2007

(REAL NAME)
This is one of the greatest films ever made, but the new version spoils it by replacing the moving original score with a pounding rock soundtrack that renders the film void of emotion and poignancy -- you no longer care about the characters. If you loved the original, avoid this version at all costs!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Outsiders, Feb 24 2006
We have just finished both reading and watching the Outsiders movie in class. I thought the movie was an excellent adaptation of the book. I know it cut out a lot, but the thing is that there are a lot of deleted scenes in the movie, that they originally filmed. I haven't bought the dvd yet, but i have been looking into it, and it's definitly worth the buy. When i read the book i fell in love with it, and then i watched the movie and now i love it even more. It's a fantastic story that i think everyone deserves to see. The actors capture it very well, i thought they did an excellent job.Usually, I prefer the book a whole lot more then the movie, but this time, i think i like the movie better. It gives you a better view of everything going on, even though you don't get the narroration like in the book, or as much detail.Though, just seeing these actors act it all out, it's amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Jan 3 2007
By
I read the book and watched the movie in grade 8, and thought the movie was lame. But after watching it again with friends, my obsession began. I love this movie so much, and I'm sorry I ever thought it was stupid. It's almost as good as the book, and movie adaptations always suck. I love how they added scenes to this version of the movie, but I can't stand some of the music they added. It makes me think I'm watching a creepy beach movie.

Other than the sometimes inappropriate music, it's so awesome!
