Book Description

Dec 23 2008 Overcoming ...
The Overcoming Series offers step-by-step guides to self-improvement based on the methods of cognitive behavioral therapy. The series aims to help readers conquer a broad range of disabling conditions—from worry to body image problems to obsessive compulsive disorder and more.Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron T. Beck and is now internationally favored as a practical means of overcoming longstanding and disabling conditions, both psychological and physical. CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors. Even when our situation does not change, if we change the self-defeating ways we think, we can make ourselves feel better. This positive, pragmatic approach is popular with therapists and patients alike. The accessible, straightforward, and practical books in this series outline affordable and easy-to-follow treatment plans, and have provided tens of thousands of readers with the help they need to overcome self-defeating behavior and lead happier lives.Books in the Overcoming Series:* highlight the history and background of the disorder, who is likely to be affected, and what the main symptoms are
* provide a structure ideal for personal use or in a program using guided step-by-step self-help techniques like recordkeeping and problem-solving
* include diagnostic questionnaires, case studies, and workbook-style interactive exercises
* offer authoritative, commonsense solutions to pervasive, difficult emotional problems

5.0 out of 5 stars Very effective and insightful Aug. 4 2009
Format:Paperback
I have completed most of the book up to the seventh chapter (up to p. 154) I did all the exercises up to this point and I have looked and did some of the exercises from that point to the end of the book.
Just reading it has really helped me understand the causes of my tendency to have paranoid interpretations. But doing the exercises allowed me to go further and better integrate the notions explained by Dr Freeman. Even if I have not yet finished it completely, the textbook allowed me to better understand the mechanisms of fear by helping me understand my own fears. And this was psychologically really liberating. I feel more at ease with people and I sense that people feel more at ease with me too. If you are caught with the problem of having paranoid interpretations about your relationships, don't give up about solving it. This book can really help you. If you know somebody with that problem, of course, it will be an invaluable resource for you in helping that person.
Even if I am satisfied with what I got from the job I have done with the book for now, I surely intend to finish it and do the exercises that remain as soon as possible. When it is done, I will update this review.

Repetitive, but maybe that's needed. Lots of useful advice and exercises so that you stay engaged. It was very helpful. Much more helpful than reading a general CBT book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delusional disorders July 4 2013
By Cassandra J Nowak - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Simple to understand. I was looking for a book to help me to understand what a family member is experiencing and this book defined why they might be suspicious and what factors may contribute to the anxiety they also feel at times. Very easy to understand and helpful, now I need to see if perhaps, the family member will read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars informative and useful May 29 2012

A great review that explains how different situations can bring on paranoid thoughts. I like the flow charts and case examples. It provides for very good information. Worth the purchase. I think the flow charts could be used in psychotherapy sessions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effective tools for those of us suffering! Thank you. April 24 2015

Far to often you find books with a lot of theory, with very little practical application; but not here. You will find the information to the point, easy to understand, and workable solutions. Who would I recommend the book too? Anyone suffering from issues with negative self talk, worry, and rumination. I would also recommend this book to family and friends of those effected.

As a side note: Although there is no explanation as to why the book was minimally priced, I believe it was done so as to make it available to the widest audience possible, thereby helping the most people.
