Gang Starr - "Owners", July 14 2004
This review is from: Ownerz (Audio CD)
How the hell can you not love Gang Starr. They've repped hip-hop to the fullest for a decade and a half and have always came with their best on every LP. Hell, their "Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr" could serve as a "How To..." for every up-and-coming emcee in the game. Oh yea, and it doesn't hurt that DJ Premiere is has always been one of the best producers and Guru can kick knowledge in his sleep. Now, to their newest LP, after a hiatus of four years, the East Coast's finest drops "Owners" which says all you need to know about their place in hip-hop. After listening to the first couple of tracks, you can tell that not much has changed since they dropped their greatest hits album in 1999, as their sound continues to transcend time. Primo's production is on-point throughout the entire CD, and the fact that the beats sound similar to their past material will definately put to rest any fears that Gang Starr fans have about the dynamic duo being rusty after such a long break. The single "Rite Where You Stand" pretty much sums up the entire album: great guest appearances (in this case the LOX's Jadakiss), excellent production from DJ Premiere and the usual tight, monotone flow from Guru. The standout track on the album comes at the end, as the 2:55 track "Zonin'" is a short track but features some nice scratching from Primo and Guru's excellent flow, as he raps, "I handle biz, I cancel kids / Just like Allen, I'm gonna show 'em what the Answer is." Regardless of whether or not you're a long-time follower, do yourself a favor and pick up this excellent LP from two of the greatest in the game.

True Hip-Hop, July 13 2004
This review is from: Ownerz (Audio CD)
This is Hip-Hop. An MC(Guru) and a DJ(DJ Premier), who've been doing this longer than most Hip-Hop fans have been alive. Here's my favorite tracks: "Rite Where U Stand"- Guru drops tight verses, but it's Jadakiss' guest verse that impressed me the most. His verse goes by so fast you have to rewind the song just to catch every punchline he drops in that verse. My favorite on this album. "Put Up or Shut Up"- Another tight song with guest rapper Krumbsnatcha. Tight beat too. "Nice Girl, Wrong Place"- A good song about girls working bad jobs. "Who Got Gunz"- I dig this song. It has a rowdy feel to it. It also features Fat Joe and M.O.P. "Same Team, No Games"- No chorus just a freestyle song with guest rappers NYG'z and H. Stax. Real tight. "Eulogy"- A nice R.I.P. song to all of Gangstarr's friends and dead rappers. "Deadly Habitz"- A nice, jazzy beat with tight raps by Guru. "Peace of Mine"- A vicious start(Guru's cussing at wack dj's), but the actual song is very sad and smooth. Tight chorus. "In This Life..."- A great beat with verses by Guru, Snoop Dogg, and Uncle Reo. Sounds alot like 2pac rhymes, but it still has that Gangstarr sound. These aren't the only good songs on the album(frankly every song is tight), but these are my favorites. Cop this if you truly love Hip-Hop or else you won't understand it.

Take It Back with the Real MCs, July 2 2004
This review is from: Ownerz (Audio CD)
It has been awhile since a good hip hop album has been released in the mainstream. It has also been awhile since MTV or BET played some Hip Hop with depth and real skills rather than looks or popularity. When I first heard the track "Rite where you stand", it stood out from all the other songs on TV. It was not talking about drugs, guns, ice, girls or anything like that, it is a pure display of lyrical skill back and force between The Guru and D-Block Jadakiss. After listening to the whole album, all of the tracks were really nicely produced by DJ Premier, with a little taste of old school beats that are more blend in with the rhymes rather than fancy. Guru has a nice flow throughout the album, definitely some of the best lyrics and punchlines in the game right now, and he can keep out of the subjects of pop-rap. The guest appearances were great, they all contributed to the album. Maybe because it was the production but all the guest appearances with different styles all blend in with the beats. Also, there are no skippers on this CD, every song is done nicely, although some start out slowly but as it goes on Guru's rhymes will attract you to listen further and keep your hand off of that fast forward button. This is definitely a great CD, real Hip Hop with some depth, I would recommend it. Lyrics:A+ ProductioN: A Delivery: A+ Overall: A+
