Not so humourous,
By
This review is from: Oxford Dictionary of Humorous Quotations (Paperback)
I've read a lot of quote books, seeking their distilled wisdom and intellectual delights. Unfortunately, most fall short, often dwell in the tedious or opaque, and tend to be fair at best. This book is no different. It deserves a major culling. I found roughly one out of seven quotes to be worthy of inclusion. As the book's introduction rightly emphasizes, humour is a very subjective matter. However, many of the quotes are merely remarkable at best - and not humourous. Further, much of the supposed humour is lost because critical historical context is no longer part of the average reader's knowledge. Likewise, prevailing tastes have changed: I could do without many of the quotations of lyrics from musicals. In sum, slogging through the chaff to find the wheat seems to be the norm with quote books. That norm applies here. So the key question is: How much slogging are you prepared to undertake?

This book delivers exactly what it sets out to. If you are a looking for a good, topical collection of humorous quotes this would be the place to start. Here's a sampling of some of the quotes you will find: "People say that life is the thing, but I prefer reading" - Logan Pearsall Smith "'Classic.' A book which people praise and don't read." - Mark Twain "Christians have burnt each other, quite persuaded That all the Apostles would have done as they did." - Lord Byron "Things have come to a pretty pass when religion is allowed to invade the sphere of private life." - Lord Melbourne "Puritanism. The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy." - H.L. Mencken "Fortunately, just when things were blackest, war broke out." - Joseph Heller "It's like hanging out with two miniature drunks." - Johnny Depp (on his two small children) Great book. The only reason I gave it four stars is the price, but I was able to find a used copy for $3 in great condition. Recommended. 3 of 4 people found the following review helpful

Good but not great,

I am supposed that it is probably impossible to compile a "complete" humorous quotations reference. I have collected a number in my pursuit of the `ultimate' compilation and I am still waiting. This Oxford edition is good, but not great. The ability to quickly access a cogent quip to ones immediate need remains a hunt and peck affair. At $30, it is expensive relative to other compilations. |
