Review

Review from previous edition: "Now in its sixth edition, the 'Cheese and Onion' (as it is known) continues to be the most popular handbook for both the undergraduate and the junior doctor on the wards... The reason this little book remains so popular is that most topics are covered succinctly on a two-page spread of the book, and coloured headings break up the text and provide a logical structure for readers of all levels. Not only has the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine aided in the diagnosis and treatment of countless patients, it has also helped thousands of students prepare and pass examinations. Size isn't everything, and that certainly is true here. Common clinical questions are answered clearly and extensively, while weird and wonderful conditions, which are rarely encountered, also get a good crack at the whip. They say the proof is in the pudding, and the fact that this book has sold more than a million copies worldwide speaks volumes" --Hospital Doctor February 2005

"This handbook goes from strength to strength as each edition keeps abreast of the breathtaking advances in clinical practice... It comes with the now familiar plastic flexicover which means it can take rough handling. It is ideal for junior hospital doctors, medical students and GPs and is packed with practical, easy to read advice... it is a huge topic and a bold task to cover it in such a small portable volume but like the preceeding editions, it manages this admirably well... It is packed with facts, knowledge and most important of all, it is an intensely practical book. If you are stuck on what to do next in managing a patient, this is the book to look up... There is no padding here; it is fact, solutions and advice all the way. All the information is very modern, relevant and presented in a highly readable format. It is ideal for both hospital doctors, GPs and their registrars and is superb value for money" --Dr Harry Brown December 2004

"This is one of the most useful books you can own if you are involved in the day-to-day management of patients and conditions... Get it! Now!" --Imperial College of Medicine Gazette November 2004

Product Description

As ubiquitous in hospitals as stethoscopes, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is a guiding star for all medical students, junior doctors and trainees. The culmination of more than 20 years' clinical experience, and containing the knowledge and insight gained by more than 15 authors, the new eighth edition continues to be the definitive pocket-sized guide to today's clinical medicine. Packed with clear, clinical management advice which is practical to implement at the bed-side, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is written in a clear and didactic style. With witty, esoteric asides linking medicine to everything from the classics to popular culture, all the material is presented in a way that is instantly memorable and even easier to put into practice. With extensive improvements based on reader feedback, the new eighth edition boasts even more black and white and full-colour images, which are now larger to improve their clarity and ease-of-use. Mindful of how doctors' training is constantly evolving, a new chapter on 'history and examination' explores this relevant critical skill in depth, enabling you to elicit as much information from the patient as possible. An expanded radiology chapters features improved images, and new topics are devoted to new cancers such as nosocomial infections, and further common surgical procedures. The references have been thoroughly overhauled with 'key references' identifying the best places to start when researching the subject, and all references are fully accessible via the supporting website. Loved and trusted by generations of doctors, the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine is a reassuring beacon of wisdom, knowledge and skills, that is forever in your sights.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pen, stethoscope, OHCM, ready to go!, Oct 20 2008
By Miguel Cisneros "Mike Cisfran" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine (Paperback)
Own it and you'll forgive me if you think I'm carried a little bit away

Pros - really a pocket book, fits your coat and isn't heavy
Covers the main topics of Surgery, Emergencies, different Internal Medicine specialties (Neuro, Cardio, Rheuma, Infecto, . . . )in a great way
The first part is really awesome: not only for its bed-side manners, but for their words in critical thinking. It goes on and on: the authors remind you every other page that you're treating patients -flesh & blood people- not illnesses. And they don't do it in a "oh-boy-lecture" fashion, but with phrases and mind exercises

Cons- it was impossible to cover every disease here. But you`ll find some uncommon conditions in the eponymous section (which can prove useful while in the rounds or for the on-call-quizz-attending). And please keep in mind: it is NOT enough for learning Medicine. You still need to work hard and study. This a "reminder" for themes you've already read or an "introductory review" for the themes you'll eventually check afterwards.

Tip: buy it w/ OHCS Oxford Handbook of Clinical Specialties: Book and PDA Pack (Oxford Handbooks Series) and you're done! 'cause it includes the other main specialties as ENT, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, Orthopedics...

5.0 out of 5 stars Medical School Essential, April 22 2011
By Rhandhali - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine (Paperback)
I'm a first year medical student right now and have found this book an invaluable quick reference in my small group learning sessions and as an adjunct to the regular textbooks we use. It is concise, well organized and very clearly written. It is not a reference text, but I have found it far more illuminating at times than some of the more specialty physiology and pathology textbooks.

It's a very, very tough book too, I've subjected my copy to some pretty severe abuse this year and it still looks almost like new.
