Book Description

Sept. 15 2009 0199560811 978-0199560813 Third Edition
Developed using evidence from the Oxford English Corpus, this fully revised text offers more up-to-date and complete coverage of synonyms and antonyms than any other A-Z thesaurus. Increased coverage now includes hundreds of new phrases and idioms, and newly selected examples of real English showing how words are used, and helping to guide you to the right meaning. New features include the Word Toolkit which helps you choose the best word matches based on evidence from the Oxford English Corpus. In addition, the popular Word Link feature points you to related words. Look up 'sleep' and find the words 'sedative', 'hypnotic', and 'soporific', and find related prefixes. The redesigned centre section provides convenient lists of words by topic, from society and religion, to fashion and technology, in addition to lists of foreign, and archaic words and phrases. An invaluable resource for puzzlers, or anyone wishing to broaden their vocabulary. The Oxford Thesaurus of English is ideal for anyone who wants a comprehensive and authoritative thesaurus of current English, for use by writers and editors, students, and crossword and puzzle solvers at work or at home.

It did in actuality exceed my expectations, my requirements being only to the year 1980; it did provide to the year 2009 in World
English, American English ,Canadian English, in addition to British English, expanding usage dramatically much to my delight.
It is without doubt that I will consider to visit again for future needs within Literature.
Sncerely, Graham J. Mobbs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the best June 21 2010
By R3aLiTY_bYt3s TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This thesaurus is the best of the best, as are all Oxford Press products.

I use this book several times a week and enjoy knowing that quality and professionalism are a huge part of this book.

If you're a curious person by nature, if you play word games, or if you write, proofread, or if you are a student, this book will be no end of help to you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Purchase Jan. 2 2008
By Lynda A. Downie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was disappointed with this product. I've trusted the name 'Oxford' for their dictionaries and expected the thesaurus to be of equal quality. There's very little difference between my old dog-eared cheaper Random House thesaurus and the recent Oxford in terms of number of words with their synonyms and antonyms. For all its bulkiness and weight, the Oxford isn't worth the extra money.

5.0 out of 5 stars All I can say is Yey! Aug. 16 2013

I use this book all the time, for all sorts of reasons. The amount of and presentation of each listing is nicely done and helpful. The additional word boxes are also cool. Nice, since I have yet to find a good thesaurus online. And, if the internet did go out or isn't there to begin with, this is nice to have around for every writing crisis.
Bought this in a set with the dictionary. This thesaurus' binding is holding up well to my use. The paper thickness and the font is good and I have no problems with it. Doesn't have as much to it as the dictionary does as far as listings, so the size of the font is a bit easier to read. You still get a lot of listings, however, do not despair!

5.0 out of 5 stars "thesurus noun wordfinder, wordbook, synonym dictionary/lexicon; rare synonymy" (Oxford, p. 881). April 11 2013

The "Oxford Thesaurus of English" is great and a must have in my opinion. If however, you are looking for an American-English thesaurus, you may actually want the "Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus" which I cannot rate for you though, as I have never used it personally.
