I shopped around and did a lot of research and it had my head spinning with all the different technical details (e.g. clad, ply, 18/10) and the huge variety of brands. I finally settled on the Paderno brand because 1. It's Canadian - always great when I can support local companies. 2. Reviews on their products are generally very good.
I've been using this set for several months now, so I'm ready to share a review on the set. Keep in mind that I'm only a novice cook so I am no expert!
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE SET:
1. It's very nice looking. I really like the look of the chunky, round handles on the pots and the lids.
2. It just plain *feels* like it's good quality - they are quite hefty in weight and everything feels nice and solid. The rivet method of attaching handles feels very secure and does not feel like it will ever loosen.
3. Easier to clean than my old, crappy pots. Perhaps all good quality pots are like this - food is less likely to stick and burn to the pot so it's easier to scrub them off. I also find that the shiny surface on the outside has stayed beautifully glossy and discoloration-free, despite some rough scrubbing.
4. Only has pots in the set. I find pans quite useless because I already have a great cast iron pan. I also did not need extras like steamer trays, pasta inserts, etc. So, I really liked this particular set because it only had what I needed.

I got this 8-piece set from Amazon after Costco sent me the wrong 11-piece set - costco.ca shows the old picture on the website, but the new set has a cheap steamer tray sneakily replacing the beautiful 4 liter saute pan they recently had in 5-layer metal. I WANTED that nice solid saute pan, so I'm happy to swap and go without the cheap steel steamer and the 10" non-stick pan. An aside: not smart for Paderno to change (and vicariously mis-represent in image) the 11-pc cook set on a major re-seller's website - it's a short road to Chinese factory production nowadays, so better work on those customer relations!
Now - about the 8-piece which is (for now) still Made in PEI, Canada... I was fairly pleased with the set that arrived, already familiar because it's an abbreviated 11-piece set without the 3 most non-essential toss-ins: steamer with it's own size lid that fits nothing else (what were they thinking?) and fry pan (I don't need a medium no-stick pan, let alone in 5-ply.) Currently 100 dollars cheaper than Costco for what you really need.
Pot sizes are usable though they look smallish, and the large saucepan could have slightly taller sides. It's still a great starter set with those three sizes, and the dutch oven appears quite usable for stews, pasta, or any type of boiling or stove-to-oven braising. It covers a range!
I feel the lids are a bit cheap and light, but them you're not paying for AllClad here, or even ScanPan which are better-made equivalents.Read more ›
I would highly recommend it to anybody.

This set looks good but each pan was stained on first use. There were no care instructions included, maybe I should have oiled the pans before use? Read morePublished on Nov. 20 2013 by Robert Holyome
