Never before this book did I attempt abstract art. A quick read through the brief summary on theory, along with encouraging words from the author, made it so easy to begin! Rolina van Vliet's words give the reader the freedom to experience abstract art for ourselves, and to play with art. I highly recommend this book to both beginners and seasoned artists.

Recently I ordered a book from Amazon.ca titled "Painting Abstracts: Ideas, Projects and Techniques" by Rolina van Vliet. Before this book, for me, abstract art was always a mystery. I was extremely pleased with the contents of the book. The explanation is very easy to follow and understand. Reading through the book I found it extremely motivating.I have read several books on Abstract Art but this one was the best of them all. It explains step-by-step the techniques with clear explanation of the terminology. I found the book to be well worth the money. I congratulate the author and thank her for sharing her knowledge with people like us who have had limited art training. This book has opened new doors for me and I am looking forward to try some of these techniques. Victor Abraham, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Yes, this book shows the author's style of abstract art, as well as those of her disciples. I might have wished for more variety of images, perhaps some examples of abstract art done by well-known abstractionists, too. But this book also is a workbook and a well-laid out workbook at that. Each page identifies a principle of abstract art and offers an exercise for the reader to work through in order to develop an individual style. An artist can do exercises ad hoc or in sequence. This makes the book very flexible and a great tool for teachers who might be looking for lesson plans to teach individual concepts of painting. As a former art teacher, I highly recommend it. As an artist who is also wanting to explore abstract painting, I'm eager get some paint on it soon. When I do that, I might even add some video to this review.
