Painting the Past with a Broad Brush: Papers in Honour of James Valliere Wright, Feb 15 2010
This review is from: Painting the Past with a Broad Brush: Papers in Honour of James Valliere Wright (Paperback)
FROM THE BACK COVER: The archaeological career of James Valliere Wright spanned more than five decades. His contributions to archaeological knowledge are legion - as a field investigator, an archaeological synthesizer, and significantly, as a key player in the development of archaeology in Canada. He is best known for his regional overviews and analytical models, notably the Laurel Tradition, the Shield Archaic and the Ontario Iroquois Tradition. His last major project, A History of the Native People of Canada (Volume 3; Part 2, unfinished at the time of his death)was aimed at a general audience, but is also widely consulted and cited by archaeologists across the country.
Painting the Past with a Broad Brush embodies the breadth of J. V. Wright's interests in archaeological questions pertaining to the many millennia of Aboriginal Peoples' history in Canada. These original papers are a tribute to Jim's impact on Canadian archaeology as a discipline, but most importantly, to the vital role that he played in the professional development of the authors and many students of Canadian archaeology.
ABSTRACT: James Valliere Wright possessed a wide-ranging curiosity about Canada's ancient past, and stressed the importance of disseminating primary site data and making these discoveries available to a wide audience. He encouraged free-ranging, no-nonsense overviews, all the while recognizing that such syntheses were erected as targets for others to tear down with new empirical data. This volume brings together archaeological analyses covering the full chronological spectrum and geographic extent of Canada's ancient history from sea to sea to sea. In its 24 contributions, there are regional syntheses, as well as thoughtful site-specific/period insights, and an annotated bibliography of his major published works. In addition, readers are treated to Jim's own thoughts on his long archaeological career.
