Product Description

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1?Pal, a friendly little pony, finds his niche on the Star Ranch and becomes a star in his own right. This simple story is written for children at the earliest stages of independent reading. Boys and girls will want to read about the different horses taking part in the rodeo and will identify with little Pal's attempts to do what the bigger horses do. Ogden's soft-focus watercolors fill each page and provide visual clues to the action and vocabulary. The large print makes it easy for new readers to focus on the text.?Maura Bresnahan, Topsfield Town Library, MA

From Booklist

Gr. 1^-2. Everyone at Star Ranch is getting ready for a rodeo. Pal the pony imitates the horses, wishing he could be like them, but he knows that he can't compete when it comes to running fast, pulling heavy loads, and bucking. When a little girl asks to ride Pal, he takes her for a gentle trot. Soon all the children want to ride Pal, who has found his special niche. Appealing watercolors illustrate this simple story for beginning readers. Younger children will also enjoy the story as a read-aloud. Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginning readers! Mar 1 2002
Format:Paperback
This book was perfect for our Kindergartener who is just learning to read. Pal the Pony kept her interest and motivated her to finish the book. The text is challenging but not frustrating: Plenty of easy to recognise sight words, plus longer words to sound-it-out. Our daughter was so excited to be able to read most of a book herself that she wants to order more. This title would appeal to boys or girls equally.

My daughter Brooke (5) is just beginning to read on her own, and absolutely loved this book. If your child loves ponies this book will keep their attention. The reading level is appropriate for a beginning reader and the pictures help them to decode the story. An excellent beginner book.

We choose this book for our struggling reader (1st grade).

I absolutely love this book. It strikes a nice balance between repeating words and easily sound-out-able words. The story is cute, the pictures are so beautiful they'd make lovely wall hangings.
