Format: Hardcover
The most head-scratchingly complex relationship in the Rachel Morgan series has always been between Rachel and Trent.

And after several books of dancing around the topic, Kim Harrison dives headfirst into the respectful-yet-antagonistic relationship in "Pale Demon." Her ninth Rachel Morgan book is a taut, lean thriller with crackling dialogue and some very unusual magic -- and the centerpiece is the baggage-laden exchanges between witch and elf.

While Rachel is preparing for her coven pardon and her brother's wedding, Trent reveals that he wants to take her there himself. Je also has important business in the same area -- and despite her reservations, Rachel reluctantly agrees. But their road trip is interrupted when a trio of elf assassins attack them in St. Louis.

It turns out that Trent is after something he's desperate to claim from his ex-fiancee, and he needs Rachel as his "mirror, sword and shield." And their road trip only gets worse as they deal with pixie tribes, hostile witches, and a daywalking demon named Ku'Sox. As the witch world turns against Rachel again, she finds that she is the only one who can stop Ku'Sox.

"Pale Demon" is basically about a vacation from hell that blooms into a massive supernatural battle. But under the skin, the book is actually about the relationship between Trent and Rachel, which always seems to be hitting potholes -- when they aren't practically ripping each other's heads off, they're sizzling with sexual tension.

And after the complicated tangles of the last few books, "Pale Demon" is a relatively straightforward book -- there's a lean, fast-paced story entangled with just a few running subplots.

The Best Urban Fantasy series I have ever read. I love the writing of Kim Harrison. I read the first 10 books all in a row and view the series as one big book. Therefore, differentiating between individual volumes is impossible for me. Therefore I rate every book, so far, as a 5 and heartily recomend them to all.

Format: Mass Market Paperback
Earth witch Rachel Morgan has to drive (she’s not allowed to fly) from Cincinnati to San Francisco in three days to attend the annual witch’s conference. Rachel’s been shunned by the coven of moral and ethical standards, and must defend herself for using black magic. She wants to be pardoned, however others want her permanently gone. Complicating her journey is an elf named Trent, who needs to get to Seattle fast but won’t tell Rachel why. Nor is he eager to explain why someone is trying to kill him. Rachel’s determination to help save everyone, including traveling buddies, Jenks and Ivy, proves more difficult when Trent unleashes a powerful demon. As Rachel’s trust in Trent evaporates, time is quickly running out.

Pale Demon is the first Kim Harrison novel I’ve read, and I loved it. There is a terrific balance of detail, character development, backstory, and plotting in Rachel’s world. In addition to entertaining characters, Harrison explores some pretty intense themes here: belonging, acceptance, self worth, and the cost of taking big risks to set things right. I understand why this is a bestselling series, and look forward to going back and starting at the beginning.

while I always find it hard to get into focus with longer books, Kim Harrison's are always worth the time. This is another unique volume into a highly recommended series.
