5.0 out of 5 stars nice addition to any traveler's bookshelf, Dec 18 2005
By J. T. Cathey - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Human Parasitic Diseases Sourcebook (Spiral-bound)
As an expatriate and frequent traveler in the tropics, I'm interested in some of the more obscure diseases I might encounter. This book is aimed at physicians and healthcare workers, but would be a nice addition to any traveler's bookshelf. It's an excellent compendium of all (105 to be exact) the human parasites out there, some of which can be acquired in surprising ways (detailed in one of the many lists). Forty-two are distributed worldwide, and for a few others, the exact geographic distribution is unknown. The particularly scary thing about some is that they may not manifest for months, and then in some strange and mysterious form. Like the oriental lung fluke (Paragonimus), for example, which can migrate to the brain. A lot of this information is not otherwise available except in fat medical tomes, which are often outdated. In addition to useful medical information on diagnosis and treatment, the authors provide a lot of interesting "factoids," including descriptions of actual cases and outbreaks. More pictures might be nice, but that would add to the weight (it does contain many parasite life cycle drawings borrowed from the CDC). The ring-bound small format makes it easy to carry and use. I'm headed to Southeast Asia again in a couple of months and plan to pack it along with Dr. Berger's "Exotic Viral Diseases." And I won't forget to wash my hands.
