Until she finds a place of her own, the divorced Sarah lives with parents Zeek (Craig T. Nelson) and Camille (Bonnie Bedelia), who aren't as happy as she thought. She also reconnects with an old high-school boyfriend (Glee's Mike O'Malley) and considers a relationship with Amber's English teacher (Joan of Arcadia's Jason Ritter), while Crosby gets to know his son with Jasmine (Joy Bryant), a former flame. Adam's 15-year-old daughter, Haddie (Sarah Ramos), also starts dating, which causes her father and mother, Kristina (Monica Potter), no end of stress.
The cozy California setup--including overlapping dialogue--recalls Brothers and Sisters, except Parenthood moves at a more relaxed pace. The entire ensemble is strong, even Shepard, an actor best known for comedies, like Idiocracy. In their commentary on the first episode, Katims and director Thomas Schlamme say they shot the pilot with Maura Tierney, who had to drop out due to health reasons (they re-shot after Graham joined the cast). If Parenthood is rarely as funny as the 1989 movie, it becomes more emotionally involving as these 13 episodes unfold (a benefit of long-form storytelling). I missed most of this season on tv, so really enjoyed catching up. The family (as most families) seems a little disfunctional. They are, however; always there for each other when push comes to shove. I enjoyed it and have since ordered the 2nd season.

I got this DVD set even though I had never seen the show before.I love the guy from Six Feet under, and the girl from Gilmour Girls and thought I would give it a try. I am absolutely thrilled that I took the chance! This is SUCH a great show! I am totally hooked! The story line is about a family of 4 grown children, and it weaves in and out of each of their lives telling the stories of them and their kids and their slightly hippy parents. This is the family that we all wish we had growing up, yet it is not sugary sweet...the stories are real and the characters are facing problems that many young familes face every day. One of the main plot lines is that one of the children is diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome (a high functioning form of Autism), the family struggles through the diagnosis and we are brought along as they deal with the life changing decisions and daily routines that shape their lives. One of the sisters is dealing with a broken marriage to a drug addict, and she and her two teenage children move back home to the parents house, and all that goes along with starting over is explored with her.... I won't give it all away...but you will find yourself saying "I am just going to watch one more....and then I will go to bed..." It is totally addictive so set some time aside if you start to watch it! This set comes HIGHLY recommended!! I just hope the show finds it's audience and is able to stay on the air! Let's get the word out about this hidden gem before it is too late!! Enjoy!!

Parenthood gives you an insight into the life of one special extended family. Drama, yes but emotional, funny, gripping and informative. For me with grandchildren in their 20's, I can see the challenges of the family today through the powerful writing and performances. The strength of the individual family as well as the importance of the support of the family as a whole comes through. I love them.
