Book Description

Oct 23 2007
Divided by theme into chapters, this light-hearted and nostalgic romp through 20th-century Paris creates a beautiful history of the world’s most romantic city and its exceptional women. This collection of one hundred and thirty duotone photographs captures the essence of the Parisian femme fatale. All of the great French photographers from the late 1930s through the 1960s are featured, including Robert Doisneau, Brassaï, Willy Ronis, Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Edouard Boubat, Jean-Philippe Charbonnier, Sabine Weiss, and many more. The photographs reveal Parisian women and all of their glorious facets: from the love-struck waif strolling along the banks of the Seine to the belles of the neighborhood balls flushed from their raucous dance moves, from no-nonsense career girls to flirty neighbors. Chanel-clad locals and runway models alike showcase the glamour of the fashion and haute-couture world with inimitable style. One chapter pays homage to the courageous women who battled for justice in World War II, the Resistance, the Liberation, and the revolts of May 1968, including role models such as philosopher and writer Simone de Beauvoir and journalist and playwright Marguerite Dumas. The Parisiennes featured here go to work, ride bikes, pose seductively, smile coyly, and are all devastatingly irresistible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming as parisiennes April 29 2008
By Rosa Maria Alegria Esteve - Published on Amazon.com
I find this book fabulous. Pictures are beautiful, all of them in b/w and most of them of anonymous women, the proof of how french women (particularly parisiennes) are charming without the need of artificial effects such as money or marketing-made. They are rebels, mothers, lovers, elegants, self concious, self confidents, etc. But I think, that what is more important, they are very literate. They are always reading, writting....
To sum up, my favorite part of the book are the quotes by writters, philosophers... about women, and parisiennes. But I must say, the original edition in french est plus charmante...
5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Style, Lovely Women May 16 2013

I love seeing the different era's and stages of clothing on the Parisian scene. From the world war eras, Coco, and the '60's on. If you enjoy vintage and like to add it in a fine and classy way to your style today, this is a book you may enjoy. I could have done with a little less street scene from world war two but that was what was going on. Older printing and style and a lot has gone on since then so if you want more modern era and styles up to date I would not reccomend this one in particular.

I read through this Big book so fast. It's full of history about French women, and how far they have come in this world. Great history book. Was so amazed with this book, I shared different parts of it that I learned about the French women with my husband. This book is well worth buying, and I'm glad I finally did.
