Product Description

Amazon.com essential recording

In addition to subverting the conventions of greatest-hits discs--only 5 of these 17 tracks appear in the hit versions from Carpenter's studio albums--Party Doll does a better job of balancing the singer/songwriter's moods than any of her releases since 1992's Come On Come On. Here, upbeat celebrations such as "Down at the Twist and Shout" (included in a live Super Bowl take) and "I Feel Lucky" comfortably rub shoulders with the quietly sweet ("Dreamland," originally on an early-'90s various-artists set of lullabies) and brooding ("Stones in the Road") sides of Carpenter's work. Finally, her rendition of Mick Jagger's title tune hints that she has vital work yet to do. --Rickey Wright

Album Description

Only 5 of the 17 tracks here represent the original hit versions of tunes heard on Mary's studio albums, making this greatest-hits release rather unconventional-but it's a welcome change! Includes Can't Take Love For Granted; Wherever You Are; Down At The Twist And Shout (live from Super Bowl XXXI!); I Feel Lucky; Dreamland; Grow Old With Me ; the title track, and more.

4.0 out of 5 stars "for sentimental reasons", Sep 7 2005
By A Customer

"This Shirt" - the mere lyrical content to this song can bring tears to my eyes - that's how good it is!

10,000 miles - quite simply "beautiful" - the ultimate song.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good value, and a great place to start, Mar 20 2004

I was only casually aquainted with Mary Chapin Carpenter's music before picking up this album. The hits I knew were all here, and so was a lot more material I have come to love as well. I was a bit leery that "Down at the Twist and Shout" was a live version from the Super Bowl; this song was the primary reason I wanted a MCC album, and I was concerned a live version recorded in a stadium during the Super Bowl might be of inferior recording quality. But I needn't have worried, the sound is great, and the performance is energetic and fun, with a verse in Creole thrown in for good measure. "This Shirt" is probably my favorite track I was unfamiliar with, but the entire album is quality; there are very few 17-track albums by any artist where I can say I enjoyed every song. I now look forward to exploring her original albums. I highly recommend this album to anyone looking for an introduction to this great artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good stuff... for the most part, Feb 17 2003

I am not a country music fan. I will never be caught in cowboy boots. I do not two-step. Texas to me is a hell of a big place to drive across...

But I like this CD. "Shut up and Kiss Me" and "I Feel Lucky" are waaaaay too country for me, but there is so much good stuff here I can get past that. I do love her "10,000 miles"... for various reasons, mostly personal, some based strictly on the music. It is a haunting, ethereal piece of art, and it does embody the emotion of loss, aching longing and unwilling resignation. I see some very negative reviews of this song here, but, hey... I don't have to listen to their CD collections and they don't have to endure mine... it's that "free country" thing...

It took me a year or so to really appreciate this CD, but now I enjoy 90% of it. Also take a look at (or a listen to) "Going Driftless", a collection in tribute to Greg Brown, which features a very sweet MCC song.

By the way, being a native of an Ivy League town, I can say that being an Ivy Leaguer apparently does not detract from MCC's work... hahaha...
