Book Description

Jun 26 2007 Star Wars
“Two there should be; no more, no less.
One to embody the power, the other to crave it.”
–Darth Bane, Dark Lord of the Sith

On the run from vengeful Republic forces, Dessel, a cortosis miner, vanishes into the ranks of the Sith army and ships out to join the bloody war against the Republic and its Jedi champions. There, Dessel’s brutality, cunning, and exceptional command of the Force swiftly win him renown as a warrior. But in the eyes of his watchful masters, a far greater destiny awaits him.
As an acolyte in the Sith academy, studying the secrets and skills of the dark side, Dessel embraces his new identity: Bane. But the true test is yet to come. In order to gain acceptance into the Brotherhood of Darkness, he must defy the most sacred traditions and reject all he has been taught. It is a trial by fire in which he must surrender fully to the dark side–and forge from the ashes a new era of absolute power.

“A solid space adventure [that] charts the evolution of an antihero almost as chilling as Darth Vader.”
–Publishers Weekly

Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

In the latest Star Wars novel, Karpyshyn (Temple Hill) charts the evolution of an antihero almost as chilling as Darth Vader. "A thousand years before the Republic's collapse and Emperor Palpatine's rise to power," Des, the young "Force"-gifted son of an abusive miner, wins big in a high stakes game with some Republic soldiers, but kills a sore loser. To avoid imprisonment, Des joins the Sith's Brotherhood of Darkness that's battling the Jedi's Army of Light. Des becomes Lord Bane after his abilities earn him a place at the Sith Academy on the planet Korriban. Determined to excel, Bane secretly trains with the devious Githany, former Jedi turned Sith, but after she betrays him, he decides to fly solo and delve deeper into the Sith past. The intensity lets up on occasion, but on the whole the author delivers a solid space adventure sure to satisfy the Star Wars faithful. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School–Yoda introduced the world to the Rule of Two–Always two there are…no more…no less. A master and an apprentice–but it was left to Karpyshyn to refine it, flesh it out, and explain it. He takes Darth Bane from his former life as Dessel, a cortosis miner on Apatros, through a circuitous route to fulfill his destiny as a Sith'ari, the Sith version of the Jedi's chosen one. Taking his father's derogatory term for him proudly as his reborn name, Bane makes the code of the Sith his own. He gravitates to the library and learns as much or more from the scrolls and manuals than from his lessons. He develops the belief that he can find a key to the ancient powers of the Rakata, the first servants of the dark side. When he finds what he is looking for, all of the knowledge of the dark side becomes his. It is there that he develops the Rule of the Two–then all he has to do is bring down all the existing Sith and find the perfect disciple. If he were less, it would be impossible and there would be no story. This is an entertaining read, well written and consistent in its history. Readers new to the Star Wars series will like it, and fans won't be disappointed.–Dana Cobern-Kullman, Luther Burbank Middle School, Burbank, CA

The best trilogy of the old Star Wars universe.
It explains very well the beginning of the rule of 2.
The first book is the best one of the serie. But don't underestimate the last 2, they're prety
good too.
The dark side is strong in this trilogy.

5.0 out of 5 stars This welcomed me into the expanded universe Oct 25 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This was easily one of the best Star Wars books I have ever read. I like his writing style, his pace, and his complete lack of filler. He writes a mean action sequence, which I feel are well thought out. I don't find myself saying, why didn't he/she just do x instead? Did I mention lack of filler? I strongly dislike books, such as LOTR, where authors feel the need to describe the dust in the corner of the room for several pages. Or include lyrics to songs that I will never hear nor care about. I find I just don't have the patience to read a long drawn out story where plot is few and far between. That is why I like Drew's novels. I agree that the language is perhaps simpler than in other books, but I like that. I can go work a 12 hour shift, come home completely exhausted, and pick up his books knowing that I can just sit back, relax and enjoy a good, exciting story. Crichton and Karpyshyn are similar in that regard I feel.

Bane is well written and his origin story is I think pretty decent. I enjoyed reading from a villain's perspective. I like how he progresses towards the dark side gradually. Within the Star Wars universe, it all felt pretty genuine. Dynamite trilogy. If you like Star Wars, and are kind of tired of the whole Luke/Leia/Han era, give this (and other old republic stuff) a try. Its a guaranteed good read at the very least!

By ryan
Format:Mass Market Paperback
It pulled me into the story of the main character and kept a good pace of progression and action that keep me interested. A story from the perspective of the Sith was interesting.

However I became dissapointed how easy of a read it was, very basic vocabulary and it didn't bother going into detail on important characters, objects or enivroments. I was disappointed in the zero surprises, plot twists or any deep intelligent problem solving by the main character. At one point the main character was faced with an impossible problem to solve (finally something to challange my mind!) but ten seconds later the solution walked into his palm, I laughed ugggggg well looks like nothing smart coming from this book.

Overall a book interesting enough to keep me reading but nothing spectacular.
