Book Description

Nov 23 2010 Pathfinder Trilogy (Book 1)
A powerful secret. A dangerous path.

Rigg is well trained at keeping secrets. Only his father knows the truth about Rigg's strange talent for seeing the paths of people's pasts. But when his father dies, Rigg is stunned to learn just how many secrets Father had kept from him--secrets about Rigg's own past, his identity, and his destiny. And when Rigg discovers that he has the power not only to see the past, but also to change it, his future suddenly becomes anything but certain.

Rigg’s birthright sets him on a path that leaves him caught between two factions, one that wants him crowned and one that wants him dead. He will be forced to question everything he thinks he knows, choose who to trust, and push the limits of his talent…or forfeit control of his destiny.

Review

"The implications of the boys' power to manipulate the past unfold cleverly…, feeding into the Machiavellian political intrigue for a pulse-pounding climax….Card's many fans will be thrilled by this return to his literary roots.” --Kirkus

* "Fast paced and thoroughly engrossing, the 650-plus pages fly by, challenging readers to care about and grasp sophisticated, confusing, and captivating ideas." --Booklist, starred review

"Card entwines two stories in this fascinatingly complex series opener....The result is an amalgamation of adventure, politics, and time travel that invokes issues of class and the right to control one's own life. Yet despite its complexity, the book is never less than page-turning. While Card delves deeply into his story's knotted twists and turns, readers should have no trouble following the philosophical and scientific mysteries, which the characters are parsing right along with them. An epic in the best sense." --PW, starred review

3.0 out of 5 stars Pathfinder Mar 20 2011
By Pauline TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
"Pathfinder" by Orson Scott Card is a combination of fantasy and science fiction. It feels like a bit of Terry Brooks and a bit of Orson Scott Card's "Ender's Game" thrown together.

Rigg has been constantly trained by his father on how to survive in and deal with the world on all levels, from hunting to financing. Father has kept secrets from Rigg, which Rigg discovers when his future suddenly becomes uncertain.

Rigg is put on a journey with people who have special talents to influence time. While on this journey Rigg discovers how dangerous the world is and how his world can be manipulated with time travel.

This book goes between two parts, with the main focus on Rigg's travels. The part about Rigg has an Old World feel to it, like Terry Brooks' Shannara series. The science fiction part takes place on a space ship. Throughout the book you know the two parts are connected, and it becomes clearer how they are connected as you progress through the book.

I enjoyed reading the parts on the space ship and figuring out how it connected with the story of Rigg and his friends. It is definitely a book that requires the reader to think and to figure out how they are connected.

I do feel distant from the characters and was unable to become attached to anyone in particular, which is probably due to the writing style of third person narration. So, while I enjoyed the book, I did not become emotionally attached to it and so it left little impact on me.

This book is the first of three and it does have a bit of closure at the end and I do believe I will read the second book...but wait for the paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Card, You Write Good Books Oct 24 2011
Format:Hardcover
Card's created a really intriguing world to play in. The blend of fantasy elements with a little sci-fi mixed in was really extraordinary and played with my head quite a bit. As always, he's got great ideas tossed into the dialogue that pause and make me think. It's an incredible novel, and I can't wait to get into the next one when it comes out.

3.0 out of 5 stars Careful on choosing the audio format July 29 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have bought the audio book (a first experience). I did not notice that I ordered the MP3-CD. So I could not play it on my audio system and my computer (although recent) could not read it either. I had to buy the audio book from iTunes which, to my surprise, was cheaper (and I was unable to transfer it on my iPhone). The description of the audio book advertises a number of voices. I thought that the voices would speak different characters in the narration of the book, but no; each voice speaks all the characters for a portion of the book. I did not enjoy the first two voices which were too rough for my taste. I would have liked the main character to be more developed, to know him more personally like I came to know, love and admire Ender and Bean in other of O.S.C.'s books.Pathfinder
