From Booklist
As its blunt title suggests, this is a tough book. When El Paso homicide detective Devon Gray is called in to investigate the murder of Theodore Truxal, it quickly becomes apparent that Truxal's family is not heartbroken over his death. In fact, Truxal's phony-cheery wife and perpetually sullen children are reluctant to help with the investigation. When Gray learns that his own troubled, ex-con brother might be involved, he struggles with the dueling roles of cop and brother. How far he is willing to bend the rules is one of the most interesting parts of the story. Although Fackler's elegant prose can be a pleasure to read, her disturbing subject matter--sex with underage girls is a main theme--may get in the way for some readers. Gray is an extremely appealing protagonist, however, and this series deserves support where such edgy crime writers as Andrew Vachss have established an audience.
