the start of it all,
By . (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Paul Butterfield Blues ... (Audio CD)
Although the real roots lie with the black artists who inspired these guys, the PBBB is where the hippy generation,(this is a couple years pre-San Francisco, and before the Stones and Beatles began stretching their arrangements out on record),learned to JUST PLAY. Their next record was more representative of what they were actually doing live at time time, and is the single greatest influence on what became the San Francisco sound of the late 60's and early 70's, (REALLY long and experimental jamming), so this is in fact the "roots of the roots of the roots" of todays jam bands and guitar-heavy blues bands, mixed-race bands, and, for all practical purposes, the white-blues-man in todays' world.

Great music, bad CD,
By A Customer
This review is from: Paul Butterfield Blues ... (Audio CD)
This is a very influential, classic blues album. It's probably THE classic blues album of the 60's. Paul's harp and vocals are extremely tight and Mike Bloomfield's lead guitar shines throughout the album. This is a must have for any blues lover. The CD however sounds really bad. This existing version was mastered using 1987 technology. The music sounds tinny and thin and there's no depth to it. This is a major candidate for remastering. I've heard The Doors complete studio recordings box set, so I know that Elektra can do great things with remastering. ....

Classic performances but very bad recording,
By A Customer
This review is from: Paul Butterfield Blues ... (Audio CD)
This is a great blues album and Mike Bloomfield on guitar is amazing and one of my favorites but the recording is terrible. My CD copy sounded so muddy and unclear that I gave it away and I am surprised the reviewers below dont mention that this is not high-fidelity at all. Even though a 1966 recording is considered old by today's standards this doesnt compare in sound quality to John Mayall's Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton recorded in 1964. Stick with this band's next album East-West (1967) which sounds much better and is also a good performance and includes Mike Bloomfield.
