Product Description

Hauled back early from an exercise with the SAS, Paul Richter is tasked with a short-notice extraction job. It goes unexpectedly well, and as a kind of reward he’s given an easy one: he’s to investigate the case of James Holden, a middle-aged Englishman living in Dubai, who appears able to predict terrorist attacks.

It should be simple – a break in the sun and a couple of days’ work at most – but, almost as soon as he arrives in Dubai, he is diverted to Bahrain. Then it all starts getting complicated. Who is the secretive patient in the Manama hospital? Who has slaughtered a dozen people at a remote stable in Saudi Arabia just to steal one horse? And why has a US State Department jet carrying a specialist CIA team been diverted to Cairo?

Nothing seems to make sense until Richter finally uncovers the outlines of a plot that will come to fruition during the world’s richest horse-race. But, behind the scenes, an even more complex scheme is being executed and Richter is in a race against time to prevent a catastrophic terrorist attack on the city of Dubai itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't disappoint, Aug 2 2011
By Kashubian Anniviard - Published on Amazon.com

Those who have picked-up some of the other Barrington "Paul Richter" novels will be rewarded, and those who dive in for the first time will be amazed at the the author's skill and craft. While a touch 'softer' than some of the other Richter novels, this tale still delivers the goods in a big way. Looking forward to more from this talented writer!

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex but entertaining, Jun 26 2010
By N. Brett - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Payback (Paperback)
I enjoy James Barrington'd novels and this was no exception although it does not hit the high piints of Timebomb or Pandemic.

This is partly because it is a little overly complex and the story does not, at times, bear up to too much scrutiny it how it all comes together. But the reason this still stand sout is that in his lead character, British agent Paul Richter, Barrington has a real winner and the story lights up everytime he is on the page. Here a lot of events come together in Dubai and Richter must follow a trail of bodies and incidents to uncover a complex plan aimed at the heart of the Saudi's.

As I said, over complex but still a fast moving and entertaining thriller. My advice to the author would be to have a stronger focus on Richter next time but his thrillers are well worth seeking out and I await the next one with eager anticipation. The author does not yet have the recognition his thrillers deserve, and I hope that changes soon.
