This book is part of a series about the lost kings of France. UNICORN BRIDE was the first. PEARL BEYOND PRICE is the second.
As the other reviewer on this page stated, this book doesn't really work very well as a stand-alone. Since I hadn't read the preceding book, I was left feeling lost for much of the time.
One thing that really bugged me about this book was the writing style. Since this book is set in 1265, I kind of felt like Delacroix was trying to emulate the style of writers of that period. The prose ended up coming across like it was written by Yoda from Star Wars. The sentences were all backwards and confusing. For example: "Hundreds of gems, there were." Why not just say "There were hundreds of gems"? Or "Good sense did it make" instead of "It made good sense". Just a couple examples of numerous garbled sentences. It's not a good thing when you find yourself rolling your eyes every two minutes. (Or should I say every two minutes to be found to be rolling your eyes is a good thing not. Ha ha.)
I bought PEARL BEYOND PRICE because I'd really enjoyed one of this author's other books ENCHANTED, but PEARL BEYOND PRICE just didn't measure up to what I'd expected of this author. Not recommended, unless you're reading the series and are dead set on completing it.

Ok, I committed a major faux paux by reading this book first. I realize that it is the 2nd in a trilogy, and if I can find them, I am going to read the other two also. I am not sure if I can rightfully condemn or condone this story without reading the others first. The story itself was interesting and covered a time period and location not often written about. Ms. Delacroix's story went into some details about the life on the Asian plains, yet I felt it was a little vague. I would have liked to have seen more detail. After recently returning from Istambul, I would have love to have seen a description of the beautiful city and its mosques (or Medeival Paris, or any of the other cities we visited in the story). Besides the major plotline, there was not much deviation into details. The cities were vague enough to have been anywhere. At any time period.Also, I felt it a bit disconcerting that the plot was not more developed. The reader understood exactly what was going on, but nothing was resolved. (I suppose that is waiting in the last book, but this book just seemed to be passing time, and another generation, to the next plot). I felt the book was well written and worth reading, I would just like to see it better developed.
