James Barber is the greatest, and is very much missed. His recipes are short, simple and direct, with lots of suggestions for substitutions in case you are missing any ingredients. And everything tastes wonderful! The Peasant's Alphabet is our favourite family cookbook, a slim volume with a huge range of interesting recipes: main dishes (both vegetarian and not), international dishes, original Barber dishes, salads, appetizers and deserts. Barber has woven personal stories into the text too, which make the cookbook a good read while the ratatouille simmers or the cake bakes.
