5.0 out of 5 stars Percy hits the Big Screen July 18 2010
By Frances L. Arsenault TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I had read the original series, and I love it...I would choose both Percy and Harry Potter, for my top 10 fantasy series.

I had wanted to see the movie when it was in theaters, but it went out, so I'd waited 'til it came out on DVD. I'd watched it and I thought it was really awesome; I did not like some of the negativity on it. The film (as you all know), is about teenage Percy Jackson who seem to be an ordinary teen; until after a monster attack at the museum (a Fury disguised in his English teacher), he found out he is a son of the sea god Poseidon. And have been accused of stealing Zeus' master lightning bolt, he finds himself caught between angry and battling gods, he and his friends embark on a cross-country adventure to catch the true lightning thief, save his mom, and unravel a mystery more powerful than the gods themselves.

So anyway I really love this film; even if there were changes to the characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Family night. July 11 2010
Format:DVD
This was a fantastic movie for a family night. My daughter loves it (7)- though there were some mildly scary parts, so I wouldn't go much younger than that.
The SFX were pretty good, the plot line was funny and touching. It touched on an interesting part of being both a teenager- and a parent. Rebellion and Protection, and the tensions that exist between the two.
My only complaint would be that after watching the deleted scenes, I wish they would have left them in!
Can't complain overly much about the acting involved. It won't win any academy awards, I don't think, but it is certainly at the level in which it was intended- simple family fun.
As always, I strive not to give anything away, but my review? Order a pizza, grab a bag of chips, and settle the family in for a good night at home!

I'm truly surprised at how many have rated this movie as marginal to bad because it's not Harry Potter! Of course it's not! It never purported to be! Trying to compare it to another movie only renders a biased review based not on what it is -- but what it isn't.
So if you're truly wondering what this movie is like and are looking to the reviews, forget anyone that even mentions Harry Potter (except this one of course!)

I found it a fresh, interesting movie using an age-old theme. It has the Chris Columbus touch, which means it's good. The cast is star-studded; the FX are good without being overpowering; the story fresh, original and engaging even if the older characters are familiar to anyone who has studied Greek Lore.
The acting is totally believable. Some good young talent there.
Is it perfect? No.
What movie is? One can find flaws if that is what one focuses on. But if it's main bad point is that it's not a glaring copy of another movie -- well that's a good point!

It is enjoyable and engaging.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average movie, nothing spectacular
Not having read the books, my opinion of just the movie is that it is a good teen-flick, pure fluff - lots of plot holes that you can overlook if you don't think too hard.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians(released Feb/10) brings back the Greek God motif to the big screen and in the process reminds this reviewer of how much I miss the magic of Ray... Read more
