1.0 out of 5 stars You Can't Really Go Wrong With the Quick Reads Series, Well I Used to Think That, April 22 2011
By James N Simpson - Published on Amazon.com
For the most part, you can't go wrong with the Quick Reads series of stand alone short stories. They all only cost a couple of dollars each, so even with an average story you still end with a feeling of, well I guess it was worth the next to nothing amount of money I paid for it. Not so with The Perfect Holiday. This one's so bad, you'll wish you'd spent your small change on a can of Coke or something instead. The basic plot of the Perfect Holiday revolves around an airline which goes through a disaster in the air on a return flight from Greece to the UK by some middle aged holidaying Brits. Well that sounds all right you say, well the problem is is takes page 63 (remember the entire book is only 87 pages) for the disaster in the air to start. Before this we're taken on a boring ride along with various British couples during their Greek holidays where nothing at all interesting happens other than the ridiculous notion that one woman with red hair and pale skin can lie in the sun for 2 weeks including one four hour session and not get burnt. Plus when the air disaster happens, it is pretty mild and again only lasts a few pages.

If you're unfamiliar with the Quick Reads initiative, they are books published to increase literacy levels by encouraging those who don't like to read beyond magazines and comic books, to try fiction through cheap priced (current Quick Reads all sell of the rack for under two pounds in the UK) short story length fiction and non fiction. I don't think The Perfect Holiday would encourage anyone who is trying fiction for the first time, or retrying fiction for a while, to want to keep reading other short stories or full length novels.

However don't let it put you off the Quick Reads short stories. There are some brilliant stories to be found!
