Sports conditioning has advanced tremendously since the era when a “no pain, no gain” philosophy guided the training regimens of athletes. Dr. Tudor Bompa pioneered most of these breakthroughs, proving long ago that it's not only how much and how hard an athlete works but also when and what work is done that determines the athlete's conditioning level.
In Periodization Training for Sports, Bompa demonstrates how to use periodized workouts in order to peak at optimal times by manipulating six different training phases: anatomical adaptation, hypertrophy, maximum strength, conversion to power, maintenance, and transition. Coaches and athletes in 32 sports have at their fingertips a proven program that is sure to produce the best results. No more guessing about preseason conditioning, in-season workloads, or appropriate rest and recovery periods; now it's simply a matter of identifying and implementing the information in this book.
Presented in a useful format with plenty of ready-made training schedules, Periodization Training for Sports is your best conditioning planner if you want to know what works, why it works, and when it works in the training room and on the practice field. Get in better shape next season, and see the benefits of smarter workouts in competition.

Possibly the best book on strength periodization!,
By Ryan Lacey (Regina, Sask, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Periodization Training for Sports-2nd Edition (Paperback)
Tudor Bompa strikes gold with his updated edition in a detailed yet straight forward manner. It has answered a lot of questions in learning more of periodization and developing sound sport-specific training programs. Bompa's 4th edition of Periodization: Theory and Methodology is also a very good book however, this one applies to strength training for sport very well. A must have in every trainer's library.

Everything you need to know.,
By Ambrose (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Periodization Training For Sports: Programs For Peak Strength in 35 Sports (Paperback)
This book explains in depth the theory behind periodization and long term training for sport specific performance. The reading is detailed enough to give u a good foundation on how muscle are made and how they function in various types of performance environments. This book should be required reading for anyone coaching youth sports. Since the book is about training for sport, there are several examples given covering a wide variety of sports, however this can become confusing (too much information that seemingly doesn't apply). It's best to read it with a particular sport in mind and create relationships between sports/examples and your sport. Also, take lots of notes and read every chapter, not just the ones you think you need. Great book!
