haunting but comfortable

My daughter lent me her copy of this lovely little collection. While this is my first encounter with Nina Kiriki Hoffman, it will not be my last. Each story is a glimpse into a strange, almost unsettling, world that is surprisingly comfortable to inhabit. Many of the characters appear in later stories as side characters, perhaps having aged several years. The prose is smooth and engaging. The stories are haunting, but somehow comfortably familiar. I really like this writer.

Hoffman's usual quirky and engaging stories. No other fantasy writer creates her own unique worlds the way she does. If she ever does write a vampire story (which she has not) trust that the vampires and their world will not be like any others anyone has ever written.
Many of these stories revisit characters from her several novels, a welcome revisit for me. Hoffman's novels are among the very few that I keep in my library to re-read. Many years later (I hope) when I die I'll likely have one of these books by my bedside.

I'm a longtime fan of Nina Kiriki Hoffman's work, so this collection of short stories was a pleasant opportunity to visit some old friends from her other books and stories, and to meet interesting new characters. Many of the stories in "Permeable Borders" are linked by the interconnected characters, showing them in different contexts and lights. All told, a very enjoyable collection!
