Book Description

Whatever.nike.com drew on an interface concept that first appeared on a designer's personal Web site. Musicians like Mick Jagger and Bjork rely on designers who have honed their skills through personal projects. These sites-whether homepages that show off a designer's work, or "business" Web pages that have been turned into creative experiments-are the breeding grounds for tomorrow's biggest commercial successes.

Personal Web Sites examines this critical genre of Web design, showcasing the personal work of more than twenty-five of the field's top artists. From narrative sites like volumeone.com; to communities like archinect.com; to portals like k10k.net, this book illustrates how the best in the business use private space as a proving ground for future commercial projects.

Insightful text and telling interviews provide an intimate window into each artist's private world of creativity, and compelling images showcase some of the most beautiful examples of online design. Offering a fresh view of how Web designers get their inspiration, this unique volume makes the undeniable connection between personal creative passion and commercial success.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, Sep 11 2002

This review is from: Personal Web Sites: Top Designers Push the Boundaries with Experimental Design and Graphics (Hardcover)
Joe Shepter's book is uncommonly well-written, and is laid out in a manner that not only precisely illustrates the text but is also pleasing to the eye. I could not have chosen a better book as an introduction to what is out there on the web. Furthermore, Shepter's acerbic wit perfectly complements his subject, and he has a light and expert touch. A fantastic book, I highly recommend it for all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Find the good stuff quick, May 1 2002

This review is from: Personal Web Sites: Top Designers Push the Boundaries with Experimental Design and Graphics (Hardcover)
I've seen some amazing stuff on the web, but it seems like I have to spend endless hours following random links to find some of the real gems. Shepter's book pointed me to some of the most amazing stuff I've seen. His profiles of the people that come up with these way-out designs add another dimension. If you dig finding cool stuff on the web, and wonder where it came from, and where it might go, you should check this book out.
