Product Description

Synopsis

Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones star in this adaptation of the Jane Austin classic about a lovelorn woman who receives a second chance for true happiness. Anne Elliot was just nineteen when she fell hopelessly in love with dashing naval officer Frederick Wentworth, so when her family attempted to convince her that she was making a terrible mistake the smitten young woman hastily broke off her engagement. That decision has haunted her ever since, and despite the fact that nearly a decade has passed not a day goes by that Anne doesn't long for Frederick's embrace. Now, eight years later, Frederick has returned a highly decorated, and extremely wealthy military man. As every eligible woman in Anne's district swoons over the handsome and successful naval officer, the crestfallen young woman still holds out hope that Frederick will somehow find it in his heart to look beyond her youthful indecision, and give her a second shot at true love. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful, Jan 1 2008

This is any Jane Austen viewers delight, to watch an adaptation that is perfect. Anne's character connects to the audience in a profound way, especially the scenes when she is writing her letters - the monologue and eye contact with the camera - is as though she was explaining her story to you personally. That made this even more wonderful to watch. The costumes and scenery were in keeping with the times and the script was edited as best for viewing. I would have loved to enjoy more of this adaptation but I know that all good things must come to an end.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good shot that has been been bested., April 19 2008
By C. Kronlachner - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Despite the more than slightly lackluster camera work this is overall an enjoyable incarnation. The cast and crew do a fair justice to the story, the intensity of long sought romance is well executed, and the uncertainty of Wentworths affections is duly felt, little else however seems to matter.

The extended time seems to have been ill managed, as the frustrated ghost of an old romance dominates the movies psychology with long silences and much scenery. To be fair it does increase the viewers pleasure at the inevitable happy outcome. Yet the story seems less lively than its 1995 predecessor. Background characters like the unsurpassable Miss Musgroves, and the involvement with Mrs. Clay and the familys financial trouble appear almost as grudging afterthoughts. The Musgrove family, particularly sister Mary is disappointing when compared with the wonderful satire of the 1995 version.

Perhaps a close comparison is unfair; this is a very enjoyable and admirably cast production that adheres sufficiently and with engrossing historical detail to one of the best and most mature of the Austin canon.

Overall: a strong effort despite a slightly mouseish, somewhat too young and consistently thunderstruck female lead. Although I stick by the 95 rendition this version is far from unwatchable and shouldnt be overlooked by the true Austin-aficionado.

5.0 out of 5 stars When the BEEB gets it right!, Mar 25 2008
By William's Mommy "Dorothy" (Toronto) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I have read most of Jane Austen's books - some several times - and have never been disappointed. And I've watched several TV or movie interpretations of her work and, sad to say, HAVE been disappointed on occasion. Sometimes "they" get it so wrong - either because of poor casting, or bad editing/costumes/locations - and so on. Having said that - THIS interpretion of "Persuasion" was magic to me. I thought Sally Hawkins became Anne Elliot in a way that no-one else has (so far). In an age when restraint was everything, she somehow still managed to display her inner emotions - that look, the little tilt of her head - and I loved being drawn in, almost as a conspirator, with those glances directly into the camera when she is writing in her diary!

And then, along comes Rupert Penry-Jones (sorry Rupert - I hadn't heard of YOU!) WOW! He's a mesmerizing Captain Wentworth and certainly has the looks and appeal to carry this part to perfection. These two leads convinced me that they absolutely would have waited eight years for each other. (Yeah, yeah - so I'm a romantic!) And, not that this has anything to do with ANYthing - it was nice to have a blond hero for once!

ALL the cast members were extremely good. With the exception of Alice Krige (Lady Russell), I wasn't too familiar with any of their previous work. That can be a plus for me - each becomes the character rather than just portraying him/her and I don't get sidetracked thinking about whatever work they have done before. (Though I confess I didn't think about the Borg Queen until after I finished watching Ms. Krige). In any event, the casting was extremely good, and the costumes were absolutely correct for the period. I thought the editing was near perfect - I actually liked being surprised by the ending. All in all, as I started out..... when the Beeb gets it right............
