Disappointing, even annoying,
By Elaine (Toronto, ON) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Persuasion (DVD)
Persuasion is probably my favourite Austen novel, and I loved the 1995 movie version. And because I loved so many of the recent BBC Austen remakes, I was sure this one would be a winner.Wrong. The most that can be said for this is the music is beautiful. Some of the minor characters are well-played and Captain Wentworth is very pretty (although, it's hard to believe that he is a sailor!), but I found everything else very distracting. Sensible Anne Eliot is turned into a gasping, whining ninny. I'm not sure if we should blame Sally Hawkins or the director for that. The scene where she runs through the streets of Bath made me turn off the TV in disgust. It was so incredibly out of character that I wondered if maybe Lydia Bennett had stepped in to replace Anne. The camera work is distracting as well. Much of it is done with a hand-held, which is supposed to be artsy I guess, but it takes away from the storyline. I won't even get into the ridiculous plot alterations here (since when was Kellynch Hall for sale?!). Every so often I try to re-watch it, thinking "maybe it actually isn't as bad as I remember" or "maybe I'll like it more", but I always end up turning it off. Stick with the 1995 version and save your money.

I'm Persuaded to say it's good but not great,
This review is from: Persuasion (DVD)
I love Rupert Penry-Jones, a fine actor and the rest of the cast was excellent, it's the screenplay that let this version down. Having enjoyed the 1995 version with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds very much, this version just fell short, skimming over the details without the depth to pull the veiwer into the story. For the acting I found it enjoyable, but I'd much rather watch the 1995 version if I'm in the mood for a little Persuasion.

Persuasion is not one of my favourite Austen stories, but it's a good story and I enjoyed the 1995 version of the film. This version, however, is absolutely horrible. Many of the more recent (made in the 2000's) BBC adaptations to Austen novels have been more... artsy than previous interpretations of the novels, and to date I've enjoyed them. Sense and Sensibility was really well done, the older version of Emma was better but the 2000 one was still good. But Persuasion is where they drop the ball. This is more of an art film than it is a period piece and was almost painful to sit through. I found myself so bored at some points that I would think back to how the 1995 version did it and compare them just to keep occupied. There are so many over played emotions that are lost to the plot because the cameraman was given too much artistic liberty and you get lost in the angles and lenses instead of the plot and characters, and not in the good way.All I can say is that, if you have watched this film and haven't seen the version with Amanda Root as Anne, go watch it. She is not as pretty as the actress in this film, but Anne isn't supposed to be a world renown beauty, she's rather plain. It's a much better adaptation than this one.
