Book Description

Sep 11 2007 Starcatchers (Book 2)

In this riveting and adventure-packed follow-up to Peter and the Starcatchers, we discover Peter leaving the relative safety of Mollusk Island-along with his trusted companion Tinker Bell-for the cold, damp streets of London. On a difficult journey across the sea, he and Tink discover the dark and deadly, slithering part-man/part-creature Lord Ombra. It seems that the dreaded Ombra has a variety of mysterious powers including the ability to make shadows disappear. When Peter reaches London, he sets out to find the indomitable Molly. Together they must combat Ombra's terrible forces to both protect the Starcatchers and the treasured starstuff and most importantly to rescue Molly's mother from the clutches of evil. Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson have done it again-written a compulsively readable, impossible-to-put-down tale that will delight readers of all ages.

Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Peter Pan makes another delightful appearance in Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson's sequel (Disney Editions, 2006) to Peter and the Starcatchers (Hyperion, 2004). This time, unwelcome visitors arrive on Neverland in search of the starstuff that Molly and her father took back to England at the end of the first book. The mysterious Lord Ombra is annoyed to find the magical substance gone. He reveals his ability to steal one's shadow—and one's soul. The crew sets sail for London to kidnap Molly and offer Molly's starcatcher father a trade—Molly for the starstuff. Peter overhears the plan and is determined to warn his friend, so he and Tinker Bell follow the ship. In London, Peter and Molly team up with Molly's suitor, George Darling, to outwit Lord Ombra. What follows is a delicious adventure through London's foggy streets which ends at Stonehenge during a lunar eclipse. Veteran narrator Jim Dale delivers a flawless performance that will keep listeners riveted to the story. Bits from the original Peter Pan are cleverly slipped in, and Peter even has an encounter with author J.M. Barrie. This is one of those rare instances where the sequel is even better than the very fine original. Barrie would be pleased.–Tricia Melgaard, Centennial Middle School, Broken Arrow, OK

From Booklist

Gr. 5-8. In this second prequel to the adventures made familiar by J. M. Barrie and Walt Disney, which builds on the events of Peter and the Starcatchers (2005), two veteran writers for adults do not disappoint. Sustaining the first book's lively pace are short chapters packed with action and well-chosen details--both icky (Peter and the bucket of excrement!) and marvelous (the pitch-perfect sound of Tink's exasperation). An evil force is once again trying to obtain starstuff, the magical substance that, among many other qualities, enables Peter to fly and to remain eternally youthful. Peter must visit London to help his friend Molly and her family of starcatchers, leaving the boys on Mollusk Island at the mercy of Hook. Squalid London streets, aristocratic mansions (one of which houses a young George Darling), and even Stonehenge make atmospheric backdrops for bouts with pirates, wolf packs, and a deliciously creepy villain who steals souls from shadows. Readers will relish the chance to further explore the backstory of a favorite childhood tale, and hope for a third installment. GraceAnne DeCandido

4.0 out of 5 stars A sequel to a prequel Oct 21 2006
By Amanda Richards HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
The follow up to the Peter Pan prequel "Peter and the Starcatchers" is a hefty book that may scare some of the more timid readers among us. 556 pages seems like a lot, but there's a lot of action that keeps the pages turning, and I finished it a lot faster than I thought I would.

If you're scared of the dark and tend to jump at shadows this may not be the ideal book for you, because even though it's not scary, it has a lot of dark content. Peter Pan sets off on a rescue mission to London to warn Molly about a sinister plan to seize the trunk of starstuff in her father's care, and takes some big hits to his ego when Tinkerbell has to bail him out of trouble over and over again.

While he's off saving the world, Captain Hook has plans for the Lost Boys on Neverland, and even Fighting Prawn can't help them when the trap is sprung. Oliver Twist meets Stonehenge, and mind control meshes with inter-terrestrial beams of light in this action/fantasy story that builds to a climax, and then ends with a wonderfully mighty splat.

Jim Dale reads Peter and the Shadow Thieves with consummate skill. Once you get over the similarities of his character voices to Harry Potter, the listening is full-on enjoyment. The writing skill of the authors is clearly evident and their ability to put a pre-story to Peter Pan is as enlightening as it is delightful. I am 48 years old and would highly recommend this story to anyone who appreciates a touch of whimsy added into their reading or listening pleasure.

Molly is in danger. Peter ant Tinker Bell fly to London to warn her. They are almost too late and must go on a desperate search for Molly's father to warn him too because the Others know where the Return will happen and will do anything to stop it.
Fun book.
