Product Description

Description

The Athabasca tar sands in Alberta are an oil reserve the size of England. Extracting crude oil that lies beneath the unspoiled wilderness requires a massive industrialized effort, effecting catastrophic damages on land, air, water, and climate. Peter Mettler shows us this extraordinary view from above, filming primarily from a helicopter to capture this breathtaking, unparalleled view of the world’s largest industrial, capital and energy project. In a hypnotic flight of image and sound, Mettler explores the clash between industry and earth, and beholds the barren wasteland that is left behind.

Vanessa Farquharson, NATIONAL POST

"… one of the most profound statements on this issue to date."

the notorious Alberta Tar Sands, that is. This film, sponsored by Greenpeace, is not so much a documentary as a document. You spend about 40 minutes viewing the site and surroundings from above (shot from a helicopter, evidently) before you hear a word from the soundtrack -- and even then the verbal message is very low-key. There's also 7 interview clips with people who live in the area or downstream from it. This low-budget production is worth seeing just to get a sense of the scale of what's going on there. To be sure, you will need other information sources in order to get a proper handle on the Tar Sands issue, but this film should get you past the glib talk about it from certain oily politicians.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Canadian should see this!, Jan 1 2012
This review is from: Petropolis (DVD)
Petropolis silently contrasts the beautiful, untouched Athabasca area mountains with the oil and tar polluted, cesspool pocked industrial area around Fort McMurray. Even more disturbing are its interviews with people living and working downstream who are observing and experiencing the catastrophic impact of "clean" water on health and the economy.Petropolis
