Product Description

After they became the biggest rock band in Canada at the start of the '90s, the Tragically Hip suffered from the widening gap between the ambitions of singer Gord Downie and the abilities of the rest of the band. It seemed as if Downie would forever be some wing-nut poet stuck fronting a grungy bar band, albeit a highly evolved one. But Phantom Power yokes the disparate halves. The Hip move away from the drones of Day for Night and Trouble at the Henhouse, employing more direct song structures and increasing the sense of attack. Those changes might be due to mixing and production assists by Don Smith (whose last Hip credit was Road Apples, their best meat-and-potatoes rock & roll album) and Los Lobos' Steve Berlin (who deftly adds a few colours to their palette with his keyboard and flute parts). Whatever the case, "Poets" and "Something On" are two very fine singles. Other album highlights include "Fireworks," which concerns a mixture of personal and national pride during the Canada Cup in '72. The renewed sense of directness is much appreciated, and what's more, Downie doesn't dumb down. In fact, his songwriting has rarely been so lucid or his intentions so clear, even when he wails "You were loosening the grip on Bobby Orr" in "Fireworks" or coins the word "heroincredible" in "Save the Planet." This could be the Hip at the peak of their powers. --Jason Anderson

5.0 out of 5 stars The HIP's...best all around work!, Sep 2 2004

This review is from: Phantom Power (Audio CD)

This is probably THE HIP'S best all around CD.

You get some acoustic gems such as...BOBCAYGEON...and amazing rockers , like the songs...VAPOUR TRAILS...and...POETS....Plus , this CD has their best hockey song about the 1972 RUSSIA vs CANADA series called...FIREWORKS!

It is like listening to all of the...ABBEY ROAD...CD by...THE BEATLES...As the...PHANTOM POWER...CD , ends with the excellent songs...ESCAPE IS AT HAND FOR THE TRAVALLIN' MAN...and...EMPEROR PANGUIN!

Not a copy of the...BEATLES...song's but the excellent way the songs flow together!

This is their masterpiece!

Also get the re-mastered versions of the CDs...The Tragically Hip [8 song EP]...ROAD APPLES...FULLY COMPLETELY...UP TO HERE...as 2004 enhanced / re-masters from...ZOE RECORDS!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Hip Album To Date!, Jun 10 2004

These guys have done a lot of great albums, but this one is my all time favourite, with Fully Completely, Road Apples and Up to Here close behind. The Energy is there, the typical obscure lyrics as well as the definitive Canadian content. A classic and must own Canadian record!

5.0 out of 5 stars wicked awesome Canada, Feb 12 2004

i love this CD, all great songs. Although not as popular as some of theyre older music, i find this CD above thier others in my CD player the most. I Especially love Poets. If your Canadian, you should own at least one of the Hips albums. I'd suggest this should be it.
