A young man with no memories fights to salvage his humanity when he’s forced into a life of murder by a dangerous crime syndicate called Inferno. The organization gives him a new name, Zwei, and molds him into a perfect killing machine, a meticulous instrument of death created to obey his masters’ every deadly command. Zwei’s not the only puppet controlled by Inferno; Ein is a girl as beautiful as she is brutal, as lethal as she is lost. While mafia violence escalates around them, the two assassins grow closer, and Zwei begins the struggle to reclaim his past and save Ein from a blood-soaked future.

I will be buying this without a doubt, an amazing anime not to mention having it in both bluray and dvd is without a doubt an added plus. I can't wait!
The ending - the real ending - is in the final credits, and it's a shocker. Is it open ended? Not really, but I suppose a third season could be produced with appropriate explanations, although these would border on the unbelievable. You'll find yourself cheering for these three assassins, and when they inevitably have to face off against each other, you're not sure who to cheer for. On the other hand, all are cold-blooded killers, so why cheer for any of them? Because you grow to like these psychopaths.
Many of the other main characters in this series are emotionally broken, cold and calculating, manipulative - you name it. When a character meets his or her end, it's often a total shock, but done masterfully.
Do yourself a favor and get this series. It's amazingly well done, from the knife fights to gun battles, hand-to-hand to - well, you name it.
I NEVER compare anime to manga from 2 different series- (#1 it's not the same art form #2 you shouldn't compare moving art to still art). Another reviewer compared Phantom to a title that was released 15-20 years ago, criticizing this series. Comparing one title's anime to another title's MANGA is just plain bad reviewing.
This anime falls in the same category (I guess) as Noir, Madlax etc., but those can't hold a candle to this series. It has way better production quality. It was masterfully animated, excellent English dub, kick-ass action and plenty of likeable characters. The musical score made my heart wrench. Do they have an OST CD?? I wonder.
The ending, as anime sometimes does, isn't FULLY a true ending which leaves it open for a possible continuation. I hope like hell this is the case- I've already watched the whole thing twice.
While everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I have difficulty seeing anyone rate this lower than 4 stars. It's not perfect, but it's damn close. It gets a 9.5/10 from me.
